PART5

My Husband Speaks

For nearly two hours my husband had acted confident.

Now he stood unexpectedly.

“Your Honor…”

His own attorney looked alarmed.

“Sit down.”

“No.”

He faced the judge.

“I swear I’ve never seen those withdrawal slips before this lawsuit.”

His lawyer grabbed his sleeve.

“Brian.”

“I’m serious.”

He pointed toward Melissa.

“I don’t know why she had Angela’s ring.”

Melissa laughed.

Not happily.

Bitterly.

“You really want to do this?”

His face changed.

“What does that mean?”

She looked at Patricia.

Patricia whispered one desperate word.

“Melissa…”

Too late.

Melissa smiled sadly.

“You promised you’d protect me.”

The courtroom became so quiet I could hear the air conditioner.

“You told me,” Melissa continued, “that after the divorce I’d finally be part of the family.”

Brian looked horrified.

“What are you talking about?”

She blinked at him.

“You don’t even remember?”

Patricia shot to her feet.

“She’s unstable!”

The judge slammed his gavel.

“One more interruption and I will hold you in contempt.”

Patricia sat.

The Truck

Daniel asked one final question.

“Ms. Grant… Mrs. Wilkes testified you mentioned your husband waiting in a truck.”

Melissa nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“Was that true?”

“No.”

“Who was waiting?”

She looked directly at Patricia.

“My aunt.”

Patricia’s breathing became audible.

“She drove me.”

I felt something cold crawl down my spine.

Not Brian.

His mother.

Daniel asked quietly, “Did Brian know?”

Melissa opened her mouth—

—and Brian shouted, “Answer her!”

The judge immediately banged the gavel.

“Enough! This court will recess for fifteen minutes before further testimony.”

The bailiff stepped forward.

But before anyone could move, Melissa said seven words that changed every face in the room.

“I still have the rest of the money.”

Nobody stood.

Nobody spoke.

Even the bailiff froze with one hand resting on the courtroom door.

Patricia’s face lost all color.

Brian slowly turned toward his mother.

And I realized this divorce was no longer just about sixty-one thousand dollars.

It was about a conspiracy that was only beginning to unravel.
