PART7: My Husband Said I Stole $61,000—Then the Bank Teller Exposed the Woman Who Did It
PART7
The Missing Sixty-One Thousand
The judge asked Daniel, “Where is the money now?”
Daniel looked toward Melissa.
She answered.
“Some of it is still in the account.”
“How much?”
“Twenty-seven thousand.”
“And the rest?”
Melissa hesitated.
“Thirty-four thousand was withdrawn.”
“By whom?”
“Patricia.”
Patricia immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Melissa reached into her purse.
She pulled out her phone.
“I have messages.”
Patricia’s face changed.
Melissa unlocked the phone and handed it to the bailiff.
The judge reviewed the messages.
Then her expression became very serious.
“Counselors, approach.”
The attorneys gathered around the bench.
My husband sat motionless.
I watched him stare at the floor.
I wondered what he was thinking.
Then he whispered something.
“What?”
I looked at him.
He raised his eyes.
“I didn’t know.”
For some reason, that sentence hurt more than if he had admitted everything.
Because if he was telling the truth, then he had allowed his mother to destroy his marriage without even bothering to ask questions.
And if he was lying…
Then I had spent nine years married to a man who was much more dangerous than I ever understood.
The Fourth Withdrawal
The judge returned to the bench.
“Mrs. Wilkes.”
“Yes, Your Honor?”
“When Mrs. Grant came into the bank, did she ever have anyone accompany her?”
Mrs. Wilkes thought.
“Twice.”
“Who?”
“A woman.”
“Was it Mrs. Brooks?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Mrs. Wilkes looked at Patricia.
“Her.”
Patricia’s hand covered her mouth.
The judge continued.
“Did you ever see Mr. Brooks?”
“No.”
“Did you see anyone else?”
Mrs. Wilkes nodded.
“A man was waiting outside.”
Brian suddenly looked up.
“What man?”
Mrs. Wilkes looked at him.
“I don’t know his name.”
“Can you describe him?”
“Gray hair. Tall. Maybe sixty.”
Brian frowned.
Then his expression changed.
He looked at his mother.
“Mom…”
Patricia didn’t answer.
Brian stood.
“That was Dad.”
The courtroom went silent.
His father had died three years earlier.
I stared at him.
“What?”
Brian’s voice cracked.
“My father died three years ago.”
Mrs. Wilkes shook her head.
“No, honey.”
She pointed at Brian.
“The man outside looked just like you.”
Brian sat back down.
His face was white.
Daniel leaned toward me.
“Angela…”
I whispered, “What?”
“I think we’re missing something.”
