PART6: My Daughter-in-Law Gave Me a $2 Scratch Ticket for My 73rd Birthday—She Never Knew It Was Worth Millions
PART6
Paige looked confused.
Graham looked stunned.
I picked up my coat.
Then I said something that made him go completely still.
“By the way, Graham, the property owner isn’t a stranger.”
He stared at me.
“What?”
I opened the door.
“T&E stands for Thomas and Evelyn.”
His face went pale.
Then I walked out.
My sister Ruth was waiting for me at the cottage.
She opened the front door before I even reached the porch.
“There she is.”
I laughed.
“Were you watching the road?”
“For twenty minutes.”
She hugged me tightly.
I closed my eyes.
I hadn’t realized how badly I needed that hug.
Inside, sunlight poured through the windows.
The yellow kitchen looked even better than I remembered.
There were fresh flowers on the table.
A loaf of bread sat beside a bowl of strawberries.
And on the refrigerator was a photograph of Thomas.
I walked toward it.
My fingers touched the frame.
“Hi, Tom.”
Ruth watched me quietly.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded.
“I am now.”
That night, I slept through until morning.
No footsteps outside my door.
No children shouting downstairs.
No dishes waiting in the sink.
No one calling my name because they needed something.
I woke up at seven.
Made coffee.
Opened the curtains.
And watched the sun rise over my garden.
I cried.
Not because I was sad.
Because I finally understood what peace felt like.
Three days later, Graham came to the cottage.
He didn’t call first.
He simply appeared at my door.
I opened it.
He looked exhausted.
His hair was messy.
His shirt was wrinkled.
“Can I come in?”
I stepped aside.
He entered slowly.
His eyes traveled around the living room.
“You bought this?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Several months ago.”
He looked at me.
“You knew.”
“I knew I wanted a place of my own.”
“You knew about the house too.”
“Yes.”
He sat down.
For a while, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
“How much money did you win?”
I looked at him.
That was the question I had been expecting.
Not Are you happy?
Not Did I hurt you?
Not Can we fix this?
How much money?
“Why does that matter?”
“Because I need to understand.”
“No, Graham. You need to understand why your mother disappeared from your home without begging you to keep her.”
