PART 10: RISING FROM THE ASHES

One year later, the world looked entirely different.
The dark living room that once held my silent despair was now flooded with bright, warm afternoon sunlight. I had stripped away the heavy curtains, repainted the walls in soft creams and warm ochres, and replaced the antique rug with colorful cushions where Lily and Ben were currently laughing, building an elaborate Lego castle.
I stepped out onto the back patio with a fresh mug of coffee, watching the autumn leaves dance in the breeze.
My boutique interior design firm, which I had abandoned years ago to manage Mark’s household, was now thriving. I had rebuilt our savings, restored the children’s trust funds, and established a life built entirely on truth, transparency, and self-respect.
A few weeks prior, Arthur Vance had sent me an update: Mark had accepted a plea bargain for wire fraud, resulting in a thirty-month sentence at a minimum-security facility. Jessica was working as a receptionist at a dental clinic in the Midwest, raising her child in quiet obscurity.
Sometimes, late at night, when the house is still and the children are asleep, I sit in the living room with a cup of tea. But I no longer sit in the dark.
I turn on every light. I breathe in the peace of an honest home.
That night in the dark wasn’t the night my life ended; it was the night my real life finally began.
