PART9: My Husband Called Me “The Biggest Mistake of His Life”

PART 9

Three months later, the company looked completely different.

I became interim CEO.

Marcus became chief operating officer.

We restored the employee trust.

We returned money where we could.

We terminated the people involved.

And slowly, something unexpected happened.

The employees started believing in the company again.

One afternoon, Marcus walked into my office.

“You know what people are saying?”

I looked up from my laptop.

“What?”

“They’re saying you’re the first CEO they’ve ever had who actually knows their names.”

I smiled.

“I know their names because I used to work with them.”

Marcus leaned against the doorway.

“Daniel never understood that.”

“No.”

I looked through the glass wall at the employees outside.

I smiled.

“I think leadership means knowing when to listen.”

Daniel eventually agreed to a settlement.

He surrendered his remaining shares.

He paid back a portion of the money.

Melissa moved away.

Andrew disappeared from our social circle entirely.

The Prescott family name became something they avoided discussing.

Daniel and I divorced six months after the anniversary dinner.

The divorce was surprisingly quiet.

There were no screaming matches.

No dramatic courtroom battles.

Just paperwork.

When the judge finalized everything, Daniel looked at me one last time.

“I loved you.”

I believed him.

That was the saddest part.

“I loved you too,” I said.

He looked down.

“Then how did we end up here?”

I thought about it.

“Because love isn’t enough when respect disappears.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I wish I could go back.”

“So do I.”

“Would you do anything differently?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I would have stopped protecting you from the consequences of your choices.”

He nodded slowly.

Then he walked away.

I never saw him again.
