PART8 – The Locked Garage: A Mother’s Instinct Exposed a Terrifying Family Secret
PART 8
The knocking came again.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Rachel’s fingers tightened around my arm.
“The person I’ve been running from for eleven years,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“Who?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked toward the stairs.
The footsteps outside stopped.
For several seconds, the house was completely silent.
Then the door opened.
I raised the fireplace poker.
A man stepped inside.
He was older, perhaps in his late sixties.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A face that seemed strangely familiar.
Rachel whispered one word.
“David.”
The man looked at her.
Then he looked at me.
“Elaine.”
My hands went numb.
I knew that voice.
Not from recently.
From a different life.
A life I had spent years trying to forget.
“David Mercer,” I whispered.
He nodded.
My former colleague.
Daniel Mercer’s father.
The retired judge who had mentored me when I was a young prosecutor.
The man whose funeral I had attended eleven years earlier.
Except he wasn’t dead.
Not even close.
“You died,” I said.
“No.”
“You disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at Rachel.
“Because I wanted my daughter to survive.”
My heart stopped.
“Your daughter?”
Rachel stepped between us.
“Grandpa.”
I looked at her.
Then back at him.
“Grandpa?”
David nodded.
“You were told I was dead because it was the only way to keep Daniel from finding me.”
Daniel.
His son.
The man who had been helping Nolan.
The man who had threatened me.
The man who had known about the file.
Everything suddenly became much larger than I had imagined.
David walked slowly toward the basement table.
“I need you to listen carefully,” he said.
I lowered the poker but didn’t release it.
“Start talking.”
He looked at the flash drive in Rachel’s hand.
“That contains records from a financial investigation I opened twenty years ago.”
“Against whom?”
“Several judges, attorneys, contractors and politicians.”
“And my husband?”
“Yes.”
I felt my chest tighten.
“My husband was involved?”
“He discovered the operation before I did.”
I stared at him.
“Then why did he join it?”
David’s expression became painful.
“He didn’t.”
Rachel spoke quietly.
“Dad tried to expose them.”
I looked at my daughter.
“You knew?”
“I found his journal after he died.”
David nodded.
“Your husband had been collecting evidence for years. He trusted almost no one.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he believed you would be killed.”
I shook my head.
“My husband never hid anything from me.”
David gave me a sad look.
“He hid this.”
I sat down.
For eleven years, I had lived with the belief that my husband’s death had been tragic but simple.
A heart attack.
A sudden one.
At least that was what the doctors had said.
Now every memory of that day looked different.
“His death wasn’t natural,” I whispered.
Rachel reached for my hand.
“No, Mom.”
David looked away.
“He was poisoned.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“What?”
“He knew the people he was investigating were getting close. He made copies of everything.”
“Where?”
David pointed toward the flash drive.
“That’s the last copy.”
I stared at it.
“My husband died because of that.”
“Yes.”
“And Rachel was imprisoned because of it.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t they just take the drive?”
Rachel answered.
“Because they didn’t know I had it.”
I looked at her.
“How did you get it?”
“Dad gave it to me.”
My heart stopped.
“You said he died eleven years ago.”
“He did.”
“Then how could he give it to you?”
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he gave me the location before he died.”
David took over.
“Your husband contacted me a week before his death. He told me he believed Daniel had discovered the investigation.”
“His own son?”
David closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Daniel knew?”
“He knew pieces of it.”
“And Nolan?”
“Nolan worked for one of the companies.”
I remembered Nolan’s perfectly clean appearance.
His expensive watch.
His confident smile.
His obsession with money.
All of it finally made sense.
