PART9 – The Locked Garage: A Mother’s Instinct Exposed a Terrifying Family Secret

PART 9
“What happened to my husband the night he died?”
David hesitated.
“Daniel arranged the meeting.”
I stood.
“You’re saying your son helped kill my husband?”
David didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The silence told me everything.
I looked at Rachel.
“And you knew all these years?”
“No.”
She cried.
“I only found out six months ago.”
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
“Because I thought you would be next.”
I wanted to be angry.
Instead, I hugged her.
She collapsed against me.
For several moments we simply held each other.
Then David spoke.
“We have to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because Daniel knows you’re here.”
A loud crash sounded upstairs.
Someone had entered the house.
David reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small handgun.
I stared at him.
“You carry a gun?”
“When you’ve spent twenty years investigating corrupt people, you learn not to walk around defenseless.”
Another crash.
Rachel’s face went white.
David pointed toward a narrow door behind the shelves.
“There’s an old passage under the house.”
I stared at him.
“There is?”
“Your husband built it.”
We moved quickly.
David opened the hidden door.
A staircase descended into darkness.
Rachel went first.
I followed.
David came behind us.
Above our heads, footsteps crossed the basement.
Then a man’s voice called out.
“Elaine!”
Daniel.
“Come out.”
I stopped.
Rachel grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.”
Daniel’s voice became louder.
“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.”
I looked up toward the ceiling.
“Yes, I do.”
“You think you’re protecting your daughter?”
“No.”
I tightened my grip around Rachel’s hand.
“I’m protecting the truth.”
The three of us descended.
David closed the door.
We moved through the passage in darkness.
After what felt like an hour, we reached another exit beneath an abandoned storage building.
Police vehicles were waiting outside.
Rachel looked at me.
“You called them?”
I nodded.
“Before we came here.”
The police rushed forward.
David immediately raised his hands.
“I’m not the suspect.”
One officer approached me.
“Mrs. Harper, we have federal agents on the way.”
Federal agents?
I looked at David.
“You called them?”
“No.”
Rachel smiled faintly.
“I did.”
She had been planning for this longer than I realized.
