PART 7

Daniel continued.

“Mr. Bennett appears to have convinced your son that removing you from the property would be simple.”

Greg looked sick.

“He told me…”

“What did he tell you?”

Greg covered his face.

“He told me elderly owners sometimes forget things. He said once Mom was moved into care, we could handle the paperwork.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“That is not handling paperwork.”

He paused.

“That is exploitation.”

The word hurt.

Not because it was about Greg.

Because it was true.

My own son had allowed someone to convince him that I was an obstacle.

Not his mother.

An obstacle.

Daniel gathered his papers.

“We are investigating everyone involved.”

He looked at me.

“Your sale six months ago may have prevented something much worse.”

I nodded.

“I had a feeling I needed to protect myself.”

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Your lawyer made a very smart decision.”

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“The lifetime lease.”

He nodded.

“That agreement was unusual, but very strong. Whoever bought the property had to respect your right to remain here.”

I smiled faintly.

“Whoever bought it.”

Daniel looked toward Emily.

“Your granddaughter made sure of that.”

Greg looked at Emily.

“You knew about all this?”

Emily nodded.

“I knew Chuck was suspicious.”

“When?”

“After Grandma told me what you were planning.”

Greg looked hurt.

“You investigated me?”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She looked directly at him.

“I protected Grandma.”

Those words silenced him.

Because deep down, he knew she was right.

Later that afternoon, Dana came back.

But she was different.

The confidence was gone.

The expensive attitude was gone.

She walked into the house slowly.

“Greg.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

She glanced at me.

Then at Emily.

Then at Daniel’s papers.

“What happened?”

Greg didn’t answer.

So Emily did.

“The house isn’t yours.”

Dana laughed nervously.

“Of course it isn’t mine. It’s Greg’s mother’s.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

She pointed toward the documents.

“It’s mine.”

Dana stared.

Then her expression changed.

“You knew?”

Emily nodded.

Dana looked at Greg.

“You knew your daughter owned the house?”

“No.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Greg looked at her.

“Because I didn’t know.”

Dana’s face went pale.

For the first time, they were no longer united.

They were two people realizing they had built their entire future on a lie.

“Dana,” Greg said quietly.

She looked at him.

“What?”

“I need to tell you something.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Greg swallowed.

“I took out a loan.”

Her face changed.

“What loan?”

“Against the house.”

Silence.

“You what?”

“I thought we would sell it.”

Dana stared at him.

“You risked everything?”

“I thought I was protecting us.”

“No.”

Her voice became cold.

“You were protecting yourself.”

Greg looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

Daniel left before sunset.

Emily stayed with me.

And Greg sat alone in the living room for hours.

Looking at old pictures.

Looking at the home he tried to steal from his own mother.
