PART4-My Daughter-in-Law Pocket-Dialed Me—And I Heard Their Plan to Take My House

PART 4

Mark stared at the papers.

“I didn’t know all that was in there.”

Alicia turned toward him.

“Mark.”

He looked at her.

“You said it was just paperwork for the community.”

“I said it was paperwork that needed to be handled.”

“That’s not what you told me.”

She glared at him.

Then I heard something I hadn’t expected.

Mark whispered:

“You lied to me too.”

Alicia’s face hardened.

“Don’t start acting innocent now.”

I felt something inside me crack.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

Because my son wasn’t innocent.

He had been in that car.

He had said yes.

He had practiced looking sad.

He had allowed his wife to make plans for my life.

But now that the truth was sitting on the table, he wanted to separate himself from it.

I looked at him.

“Mark.”

He met my eyes.

“Did you know about Silver Meadows?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Did you know they planned to sell my house?”

His lips parted.

“I…”

“Did you know about Bruce?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“Did you know the house was paid off?”

He looked confused.

“What?”

Alicia turned sharply.

“What are you talking about?”

I looked between them.

“You both seem to know so much about my house. Somehow neither of you knows the simplest fact.”

Samuel quietly slid a document across the table.

“My house,” I said, “has been paid off since 1998.”

Mark stared at the document.

Alicia didn’t move.

Samuel tapped the paper.

“No mortgage. No lien. No outstanding debt.”

Alicia’s face went pale.

“But…”

I smiled sadly.

“You’ve been paying the mortgage for four years?”

Mark looked at her.

“What mortgage?”

She didn’t answer.

And suddenly I understood.

The forty thousand dollars.

The monthly transfers.

The emergency repairs.

The vacations.

The new car.

The lake house dreams.

They hadn’t been paying a mortgage.

They had been spending my money.

I looked at Mark.

“How much did you think you were paying on my house?”

He looked at Alicia.

“I don’t know.”

“Because you never checked.”

He said nothing.

Samuel opened another folder.

“I checked.”

He placed a statement on the table.

“For the past four years, Dorothy has transferred approximately forty-five hundred dollars per month into the account Mark and Alicia provided as their mortgage account.”

I looked at Alicia.

“Four thousand five hundred.”

She swallowed.

“That’s not what it was for.”

I stared at her.

“What was it for?”

She couldn’t answer.

Samuel continued.

“The payments total slightly more than two hundred thousand dollars.”

Mark’s face went white.

“Two hundred…”

He stopped.

Alicia stood up.

“This is ridiculous.”

Samuel remained calm.

“Sit down.”

She looked at him.

“You can’t tell me what to do.”

“No,” he said. “But I can tell you what the documents say.”

He opened another folder.

“And I strongly recommend you sit down.”

Alicia slowly lowered herself into the chair.

I looked at my son.

“Mark, where did my money go?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I thought…”

“What did you think?”

“I thought Alicia was handling it.”

That sentence hurt more than anything else.

He hadn’t known.

He hadn’t asked.

He had trusted his wife with his mother’s money without ever checking.

I nodded slowly.

“That’s exactly the problem.”
