PART7-My Daughter-in-Law Pocket-Dialed Me—And I Heard Their Plan to Take My House
PART 7
Alicia stared at him.
“What?”
“The money.”
“I told you. Bills.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I saw the statements last night.”
Alicia froze.
“What statements?”
“The credit card.”
Her face changed.
Mark looked at me.
“She wasn’t just using Mom’s money for the house.”
Alicia whispered:
“Mark, don’t.”
He continued.
“She was using it to pay off her credit cards.”
I felt the room grow colder.
“And there was more.”
Alicia stood.
“Stop.”
Mark’s voice broke.
“You bought the boat.”
Silence.
Eleanor looked at me.
Samuel slowly closed his eyes.
I stared at Alicia.
“The boat?”
She began crying again.
But this time, I didn’t feel sorry for her.
Mark looked at me.
“Mom, I swear I didn’t know.”
I believed that too.
But there was still one question.
The question that had been sitting in my mind since 7:15 that morning.
“If you were planning to sell my house,” I asked Alicia, “why did you need me to sign anything?”
She didn’t answer.
Samuel did.
“Because Dorothy’s name is the only name on the deed.”
I looked at Alicia.
“And without my signature?”
Samuel shook his head.
“They couldn’t sell it.”
Alicia’s face collapsed.
“But Bruce said—”
She stopped herself.
Too late.
I looked at her.
“Bruce said what?”
She remained silent.
Mark turned toward her.
“What did Bruce say?”
Alicia said nothing.
Samuel opened his folder again.
“Actually, I already know.”
He removed a printed email.
“Bruce contacted a prospective buyer six days ago.”
Mark stared.
“Six days?”
Samuel nodded.
“The house was discussed at an estimated sale price of $180,000.”
I laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe how confidently they had planned my disappearance.
Then Samuel added:
“There is one problem.”
Alicia looked up.
“What?”
Samuel smiled.
“The house is worth closer to $430,000.”
Alicia’s eyes widened.
I watched her do the math.
Four hundred thirty thousand dollars.
Minus nothing.
Because there was no mortgage.
Her dream had never been a lake trip.
It had been a payday.
