PART8-My Daughter-in-Law Pocket-Dialed Me—And I Heard Their Plan to Take My House
PART 8
I stood beside the window.
The sun had finally come through the clouds.
For the first time that morning, my kitchen felt warm.
I looked at my son.
“Mark, I want you to leave.”
He nodded.
He stood.
Then he looked at me.
“Can I come back?”
I took a breath.
“Not today.”
He nodded again.
“And Mom?”
“Yes?”
“I’ll call you Sunday.”
I almost smiled.
“Don’t.”
He looked surprised.
“Don’t call me because it’s Sunday.”
I pointed toward the door.
“Call me when you actually have something to say.”
He nodded.
Then he left.
Alicia remained seated.
She stared at me.
“What about me?”
I looked at her.
“You should probably call Bruce.”
“Why?”
“Because he may want to explain why he’s no longer welcome on my property.”
She stood slowly.
“You’re going to destroy our marriage.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
I opened the door.
“You did that yourself.”
She walked outside.
Eleanor watched her cross the driveway.
Then she came back inside.
“Dorothy?”
“Yes?”
“You all right?”
I looked at the cold cup of tea on the table.
Then at Raymond’s old photograph hanging above the fireplace.
And for the first time in four years, I felt something I hadn’t expected.
Peace.
“I’m getting there.”
Eleanor smiled.
Samuel gathered his papers.
“You did well.”
I laughed.
“I was terrified.”
“Good.”
I looked at him.
“Good?”
He nodded.
“Courage isn’t the absence of fear, Dorothy. It’s what you do while you’re afraid.”
I looked toward the front window.
Mark’s car was disappearing down the street.
My son had made a terrible mistake.
But perhaps he wasn’t beyond saving.
Alicia was another story.
Because she had not made one mistake.
She had built an entire plan.
And plans leave evidence.
