PART7-My Husband Secretly Removed Me From Our Bank Accounts and Said, “I Earn It, So I Decide Who Touches It”—So I Drove Straight to the Courthouse
PART 7
On day eight, another surprise arrived.
A title company contacted Evelyn.
They had received an inquiry from someone asking about placing a lien against my property.
The person making the inquiry?
Hale Offshore Consulting LLC.
I stared at the email.
“He tried to put a lien on my house?”
“Not exactly,” Evelyn said. “An inquiry isn’t a lien. We need to be precise.”
“But why would his company ask?”
“That is what we’re investigating.”
She requested the records.
Two days later, we learned what had happened.
Travis had apparently tried to use the property as collateral in connection with a business credit application.
But because he wasn’t the owner, the process had stalled.
The title company had flagged the discrepancy.
My father’s estate records had prevented him from simply attaching the property to his company.
I sat silently.
Then I remembered something.
Three months earlier, Travis had asked me to sign a stack of documents.
He told me they were “insurance updates.”
I had been busy.
I signed some pages.
But I remembered refusing one.
It had been a document related to the property.
Travis had become irritated.
“You don’t trust me?”
I had laughed nervously.
“It’s not that.”
“Then sign it.”
“I want to read it first.”
He had grabbed the papers.
“Forget it.”
At the time, I thought it was nothing.
Now I realized it might have been the first time he discovered he couldn’t simply put my name on something and expect me to sign blindly.
Evelyn asked me to describe the document.
I couldn’t remember exactly.
But I remembered one phrase.
Security interest.
Her expression changed.
“That may be important.”
I looked at her.
“What happens if I had signed it?”
“We would need to review the document to know.”
“And if it was what I think it was?”
“Then the situation could have been very different.”
I stared at the wall.
For years, I had thought my caution was insignificant.
That day, it may have protected my father’s house.
On day ten, I received another message from Travis.
TRAVIS: I know you’ve been talking to someone.
I didn’t answer.
Another message came.
TRAVIS: You don’t understand what you’re doing.
Then:
TRAVIS: We can fix this privately.
I placed the phone face down.
Ten minutes later:
TRAVIS: If you go through with this, our marriage is over.
I stared at the screen.
Then I finally understood.
He thought the threat of divorce would frighten me into surrender.
For nine years, it probably would have.
But something had changed.
The possibility of losing my marriage no longer frightened me as much as the realization that I had already lost the version of my marriage I thought I had.
I didn’t answer.
That night, I slept better than I had in months.
On day twelve, Evelyn called me.
“June, come in.”
Her voice was different.
I knew immediately that something had happened.
When I arrived, there were several documents on her desk.
She pushed one toward me.
It was a bank transfer.
Then another.
Then another.
Travis had been moving money for months.
But there was one account we hadn’t known about.
A savings account in his name.
Balance:
$86,412.19
I stared at it.
“How?”
“His salary deposits.”
“But I thought our household account received his salary.”
“Apparently not all of it.”
Evelyn showed me the deposits.
Every month, a portion of Travis’s paycheck had been diverted.
Sometimes $1,500.
Sometimes $2,000.
Sometimes more.
Over several years.
I calculated the approximate total.
It was staggering.
The money wasn’t just from the last few months.
It had been accumulating.
Then we found another account.
And another.
Some were small.
Some were nearly empty.
But together they told a story.
Travis had been quietly building a financial life I knew nothing about.
While telling me that we couldn’t afford a new washing machine.
While telling me to postpone replacing the air conditioner.
While telling me that groceries were getting expensive.
While buying fishing equipment and watches.
I wasn’t angry anymore.
I was simply exhausted.
