PART4
Michael shook his head.
“That’s cold.”
I looked at him.
“No. What’s cold is teaching your child to lie to his father.”
We stayed together a little longer.
Finally, I drove to a hotel across town.
I couldn’t go home.
Not yet.
At 11:43 PM, another message arrived.
This time, it was from an unknown number.
“Liam, we need to talk. It’s Daniel.”
I stared at the screen.
Before I could respond, another message appeared.
“Sarah doesn’t know I’m contacting you.”
Then a third.
“There are things you don’t know about your wife. And I think you deserve to hear them.”
I sat up in bed.
For a moment, I considered blocking the number.
But then another message came through.
“This isn’t just about the affair. Ask Sarah what happened to the money from your joint savings account.”
My blood ran cold.
The savings account?
I opened my banking app.
The account we had been building for years was still there.
But the balance looked wrong.
Very wrong.
I checked the transaction history.
A transfer of $18,500.
Another transfer of $12,000.
Then another for $9,700.
All sent to an account I didn’t recognize.
I scrolled further.
My hands started trembling.
Over the previous six months, more than $47,000 had disappeared.
I called Michael immediately.
He answered sleepily.
“What now?”
“Michael, I think there’s something else.”
“What?”
“Money.”
I explained what I had found.
He became completely quiet.
Then he said:
“Liam, don’t touch anything else. Screenshot everything. Tomorrow, contact the bank and get the full transaction records.”
I nodded, even though he couldn’t see me.
Then I looked at Daniel’s messages again.
I typed:
“What money are you talking about?”
His reply came almost immediately.
“Meet me tomorrow morning. I’ll explain everything. But don’t tell Sarah.”
I stared at those words for a long time.
The affair was one betrayal.
The missing money was another.
But I had no idea what Daniel could possibly know that would make him willing to contact the husband of the woman he was sleeping with.
And just before midnight, he sent one final message.
“Liam, there’s a reason Sarah was so comfortable having me in your house. She wasn’t just letting me stay there. She was making plans with me.”
I put the phone down.
For the first time that night, I wasn’t thinking about the kiss.
I wasn’t thinking about the bedroom.
I was thinking about Noah and Lily.
And whether the life I thought I had built for them had been quietly taken apart while I was busy earning money to protect it.
Tomorrow, I would meet Daniel.
And I had a terrible feeling that the truth was going to be much worse than an affair.
Because apparently, my wife hadn’t just been preparing a secret life with another man. She had been preparing something for our entire family.
At 9:00 the next morning, I walked into a small coffee shop downtown.
Daniel was already sitting in the corner.
He looked different from the man I had watched kissing my wife the night before.
He looked nervous.
There was no expensive smile, no confidence, and no bottle of wine.
Just a man sitting alone with two coffees and a thick brown envelope.
I approached his table.
“Why did you contact me?”
Daniel looked up.
“Because I think you deserve to know what Sarah has been doing.”
I pulled out a chair.
“Start talking.”
He took a deep breath.
“Sarah and I have been seeing each other for about fourteen months.”
I already knew that part.
“Keep going.”
He opened the envelope.
Inside were bank transfer screenshots, printed emails, and several documents.
“She told me your marriage was practically over. She said you were only staying together because of the children.”
I laughed bitterly.
“That’s interesting. She told me she loved me yesterday morning.”
Daniel looked down.
“I know.”
Then he showed me the bank statements.
The $47,000 hadn’t gone toward vacations or expensive gifts.
Most of it had been transferred into an account Daniel believed belonged to Sarah.
But there was something else.
“She asked me to help her find an apartment,” he said.
I stared at him.
“What?”
“She said she wanted to leave after your next business trip. She told me she was planning to move out with the children.”
My stomach tightened.
“Did she have my permission?”
Daniel shook his head.
“She said she didn’t need it. She told me you traveled constantly and that she had already spoken to someone about the house.”
I leaned forward.
“Who?”
“A real estate agent.”
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
The house wasn’t just a building.
It was the home we had purchased together, renovated together, and filled with thirteen years of memories.
“Was she planning to sell it?”
Daniel hesitated.
“That’s what I understood.”
I looked through the documents.
One email mentioned a possible listing date.
Another discussed transferring money before the sale.
Then I saw something that made my hands go cold.
A document with my name on it.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
Except I had never signed it.
I looked at Daniel.
“Where did you get this?”
“She sent it to me because she wanted me to review the paperwork. I work in commercial property management. She said she needed help understanding the process.”
I studied the signature.
It looked remarkably similar to mine.
But it wasn’t mine.
“Did you know she was using my name?”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not at first.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“When I realized what she was doing, I asked questions. She became angry and told me it wasn’t my business.”
“Why didn’t you walk away?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Finally, he said:
“Because I was already involved in something I knew was wrong. And because I started realizing she wasn’t telling me the truth either.”
I leaned back.
“So why are you helping me now?”
Daniel looked directly at me.
“Because last night, she told me Noah had asked questions. She laughed about it. She said she had already taught him to keep quiet.”
His voice became quieter.
“I have a daughter, Liam. She’s seven. When I heard her talking about your son like that, I couldn’t stop thinking about my own child.”
I didn’t forgive him.
I wasn’t interested in his excuses.
But I took the documents.
“Thank you for giving me these. Don’t contact my family again.”
He nodded.
Before I stood up, he said one more thing.
“Liam?”
I turned.
“Whatever you do, protect your children. Sarah is going to tell you that you’re imagining everything. Don’t let the argument become about the affair. Keep everything documented.”
I walked out without answering.
That afternoon, I contacted my bank.
I reported the unfamiliar transfers and asked for the complete transaction history.
I also contacted an attorney.
