PART6
His message contained only one sentence.
Mom, we need to talk. Vanessa just told me something about her father, and I don’t think you’re going to believe it.
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
She says her father has evidence that you deliberately hid your wealth from our family, and he wants me to choose between you and her.
My heart sank.
Whatever Richard had planned, he had already begun involving my son.
And I suddenly realized that the biggest battle ahead might not happen inside a boardroom.
It might happen inside my own family.
THE TRUTH THAT DESTROYED THEIR PERFECT FAMILY
I read Daniel’s message three times.
She says her father has evidence that you deliberately hid your wealth from our family, and he wants me to choose between you and her.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Not because I was afraid of Richard Whitmore.
Not because I was worried about losing money, reputation, or control of my company.
I was worried about my son.
Daniel had already lost his father. James had died when Daniel was twenty-four, and since then, I had done everything I could to make sure my son never felt alone.
I had attended his university graduation, celebrated his first architectural project, helped him through difficult years, and watched him slowly build a life of his own.
I never expected him to inherit my business.
I never expected him to become wealthy.
All I wanted was for him to find someone who loved him for the man he was.
And now I was beginning to wonder whether Vanessa was that person.
I called him immediately.
“Daniel, sweetheart, where are you?”
“At home.”
“Are you alone?”
“Vanessa is here.”
“Would you like me to come over?”
He hesitated.
“Mom, I think we need to talk somewhere private.”
“Of course.”
“Can we meet at your house in an hour?”
“I’ll make coffee.”
He gave a weak laugh.
“Thanks, Mom.”
When I ended the call, Rebecca was still standing beside me.
“Is everything all right?”
“No,” I replied. “But it will be.”
I showed her the message.
She read it carefully.
“Richard may be trying to turn this into a family matter to distract from the investigation.”
“Perhaps. But I won’t allow him to use my son as a shield.”
Rebecca nodded.
“Do you want us to investigate Vanessa’s involvement?”
“Yes. But carefully. I don’t want assumptions. I want facts.”
An hour later, Daniel arrived at my cottage.
He looked exhausted.
His normally neat hair was untidy, and he was still wearing the same shirt he had worn the previous evening.
I opened the door.
“Come in, sweetheart.”
He hugged me tightly.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then he stepped back.
“Mom, I need to ask you something.”
“Ask anything.”
“Are you really the owner of Collins Industrial Holdings?”
I smiled gently.
“Yes.”
He stared at me.
“You’re serious?”
“Very.”
He sat down slowly.
I made two cups of coffee and placed one in front of him.
For the next twenty minutes, I explained everything.
I told him about the company James and I had founded, the small factory we had started with, the years of hard work, the expansion, and the decisions that had eventually made Collins Industrial Holdings one of the largest companies in its industry.
I showed him an old photograph of his father standing outside our first building.
Daniel held it carefully.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”
I sat opposite him.
“Because I wanted you to build your own life.”
“But you could have helped me with my architecture firm.”
“I could have.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because I wanted you to know that your achievements belonged to you. Not to my money.”
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Then he looked up.
“Vanessa told me you were barely making ends meet.”
“I know.”
“She said you lived on a small pension.”
“I never told her that.”
“She said you couldn’t afford to help us with the wedding.”
I took a slow breath.
“Daniel, did you ever ask me?”
He lowered his eyes.
“No.”
“Then perhaps this is a lesson for both of us.”
He nodded.
After a moment, he asked, “What happened at the company today?”
I told him about Richard’s suspension and the preliminary financial investigation.
Daniel listened without interrupting.
When I mentioned the proposed $4.5 million contract involving his architectural firm, he looked genuinely shocked.
“What?”
“Your future father-in-law had instructed someone to prepare a proposal involving your business.”
“Did he say why?”
“He mentioned your relationship with Vanessa and the possibility of a family connection.”
Daniel stood and began pacing.
“That’s impossible.”
I remained quiet.
He stopped.
“Mom, I swear I knew nothing about that.”
“I believe you.”
“But Vanessa…”
He couldn’t finish the sentence.
Then his phone rang.
Her name appeared on the screen.
Daniel stared at it before answering.
“Hello?”
I couldn’t hear Vanessa clearly, but her voice was sharp.
“Where are you?”
“At my mother’s.”
“Why?”
“Because I need to talk to her.”
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made Daniel’s expression change.
He put the call on speaker.
“Daniel, you need to understand something. My father is furious. Your mother has humiliated him in front of his entire board.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Vanessa, your father insulted my mother.”
“He was joking!”
“He offered her a cleaning job in front of everyone.”
“Oh, please. It was harmless.”
I watched my son carefully.
He looked as though something inside him was slowly breaking.
Then Vanessa continued.
“Anyway, my father says we need to get married as soon as possible. He doesn’t want this situation affecting our future.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does getting married have to do with anything?”
“Everything. Once we’re married, our families will be connected. My father can help your architecture business grow.”
I exchanged a glance with Daniel.
He remained silent.
Vanessa continued.
“He can even introduce you to some important people. You should be grateful.”
Daniel finally spoke.
“Vanessa, did you know your father was preparing a $4.5 million contract involving my company?”
Silence.
A long silence.
Then she replied.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Did you know?”
“Daniel, you’re making this into something it isn’t.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Her voice became colder.
“Listen to me. My father is a very important man. He has worked hard for everything he has. Your mother walking into his company and humiliating him doesn’t make her right.”
Daniel looked at me.
Then he said quietly:
“Vanessa, my mother built that company.”
Another silence.
“What?”
“My mother founded Collins Industrial Holdings. She owns it.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“It’s true.”
“No. Your mother lives in a little cottage and drives an old Toyota.”
Daniel’s voice became firm.
“And that makes her less valuable?”
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Then she said something I will never forget.
“Well, if she’s so wealthy, why has she been pretending to be poor? She clearly wanted to test us.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“My mother doesn’t owe you an explanation for how she lives.”
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“Daniel, you’re supposed to be on my side!”
“I am on the side of the woman who raised me.”
He ended the call.
Then he sat down and covered his face with both hands.
I moved beside him and placed an arm around his shoulders.
He began to cry.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just the quiet tears of a man who had suddenly realized that the future he had imagined might never exist.
The next morning, Richard Whitmore called me.
