What Happens To Queen Camilla When Prince William Becomes King?
Whether King Charles dies or abdicates, Prince William will one day take the throne and things are going to change for Camila.
When Queen Elizabeth died on September 8th 2022, the Prince of Wales became King Charles Ili and his wife, Camila, became Queen consort.
While Camila’s royal title had been up in the air for years leading up to Charles’s Ascension in February 2022, Elizabeth issued a public statement on the Royal website writing: it is my sincere wish that, when the time comes, Camila will be known as Queen consort, as she continues her own Lawy Service.
Until now, mindful of the sensitivities around Camila’s role in the breakdown of Charles’s first marriage, it had been intended that she would become princess consort.
When Charles became king, the consort portion of Camila’s title was dropped, but it still implied because Camila married into the royal family rather than being born into it.
And when William Prince of Wales succeeds his father as king, Camila’s title will change again, probably to Queen Dowager, to reflect her status as a widow.
Not every Royal Widow is referred to this way.
The last queen Dowager was the Widow of King William Iv, Queen Adelaide, who held the title for 12 years until her death in 1849.
In contrast, the most recent Widow of a king was Queen Elizabeth’s mom, known as the queen mother.
She held the title for 50 years.
She was also named Elizabeth, so the Queen Mother title was important to eliminate confusion.
William takes charge
In Camila’s case, however, William is her stepson, so the Queen Mother title doesn’t apply in the event of his father’s death.
William, as king, would be the prime primary decision maker for the firm, including decisions about Camila’s future.
In an interview with Usa Today, Joe little, managing editor of Majesty Magazine, explained every aspect of her public and private life would
be reviewed.
But there’s another possibility.
Charles’s 2024 cancer diagnos has set the rumor mill Ablaze, with the possibility of abdication.
Speaking to Woman’s Day, an anonymous source speculated cancer has changed him.
There’s no one.
He’d rather spend his time with than Camila.
Stepping aside could be what gives him more time with her.
However, some Royal authorities consider this unlikely.
In an interview with the Royal Observer Royal expert, Charles Ray insisted that’s just not in his psychi.
He’s not going to give it all up and sit in some retirement home somewhere.
Regardless of when or how William becomes king, Camila will likely have plenty of advanced knowledge about the plans for succession.
Ensuring a smooth transition between monarchs is important, and Charles was working out the details for what lies ahead long before his cancer diagnosis.
Royal events
Camila and William have a complicated relationship.
According to author Christopher Anderson, he tolerates her.
Camila has always been a little afraid of William.
She’s definitely one of those people who, uh. has stirred up the pot but done it so expertly and so quietly behind the scenes.
Others believe William and Camila’s connection has strengthened over the years as the family has worked through difficulties together, like Prince Harry’s departure from his role as a working Royal.
In addition, both Camila and William have had to care for partners in cancer treatment.
In March 2024, William and Camila attended several roal events together and their body language seemed to reflect a more comfortable connection than in the past.
Regardless of personal opinions, given that there are fewer senior working Royals these days, Camila may be needed at various official events.
In an interview with Us Weekly, Royal historian Gareth Russell hypothesized, potentially you would just have King William and Queen Catherine dealing with it, doing all of it until their children come of age.
If Prince George, princess Charlotte and Prince Louie are still in school when William takes the
throne, Camila’s experience and assistance could be inv valuable.
Camilla’s causes
Camila began her royal charitable work in 2005, long before she became Queen and in the event of William becoming King University of Toronto historian Carolyn Harris surmised, Camila would likely keep up her charitable roles related to literacy and domestic violence.
The Queen’s mission to promote reading goes back to 2010, when she began working with the national Literacy Trust.
In 2021, she created her own organization, the Queen’s reading room.
Their website features book recommendations, including those curated by Camila, as well as authors reading excerpts from their work, and in 2023 the organization launched an annual literary festival.
And since 2009 Camila has worked to support survivors of rape and domestic violence.
7 years later, she expanded her efforts and became involved with safe lives, where she has interacted with survivors and families.
In 2024, Camila participated in a documentary to raise awareness of the topic.

Before becoming Queen, Camila expressed her commitment to her advocacy work, explaining to British Vogue: You Can’t desert things that you’re in the middle of.
A change of address
Charles has an impressive array of Uk homes.
He and Camila have lived at clarence’s house since before their marriage and may move to
Buckingham Palace after construction wraps in 2027.
Once William becomes king, however, Camila could find herself packing and moving again, possibly to a royal property of Williams choosing.
As historian Carolyn Harris explained to Usa today, it’s at his discretion, definitely, but I’m sure King Charles lii would have his own wishes made clear about that.
Some have speculated that Charles might want Camila to live at Royal Lodge, the current home of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, Duke and Duchess of York.
He wants to have a space for her in in a private area in an area that’s close enough to the family.
Royal residences aside, Camila is fortunate to have another option.
Since the mid 90s she’s owned Ray Mill House, an opulent estate with spacious grounds.
A source told the telegraph, Ray Mill is the only place where she can literally and metaphorically kick off her shoes and spend time with family and friends in a really informal setting.
It’s an Escape from Royal life.
The opportunity for privacy and relaxation might perfectly suit Camila’s needs if her royal role changes sometime in the future.
