Kate Middleton has been experimenting with her look over the years, and she’s still finding ways to surprise royal watchers.
A few months ago, many believed she had dyed her hair blonde. This week, however, she debuted something entirely different — at least as far as the public knows. During a royal engagement, the Princess of Wales stepped out with her hair styled in a plait, and fans couldn’t stop talking about it.
A style icon who still surprises
Kate Middleton has long been admired for her fashion sense and polished appearance. Yet even after years in the spotlight, she continues to catch royal fans off guard. Last September, when photographers captured Kate walking through the Natural History Museum gardens with Prince William, her hair appeared noticeably lighter. Many assumed she had changed her hair color, but the reality was far simpler.
Later, while attending the Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall, Kate chatted with actress Su Pollard, who remarked, “I like your hair, it looks a lot lighter.” According to Hello Magazine, Kate replied, “It used to be brown, but it’s gone light in the sunshine.”
Sun, sea, and a natural transformation
Stylist Sarah Gadston later shared more insight while speaking to the Daily Mail. “After a sun-soaked holiday in Greece, Kate returned not only with a refreshed spirit but also with naturally lightened hair. The combination of sea air, sunshine, and saltwater had gently lifted her hair to a softer shade—creating the perfect starting point for her next salon visit,” she explained.
At the time, Kate hadn’t made any deliberate changes to her hair. This week, however, that changed.
On Tuesday, the Princess of Wales carried out several engagements in the North of England. By the final appearance of the day, she had swapped her usual formal style for a more relaxed outfit, opting for jeans, walking boots, and a warm winter coat. Still, it wasn’t her clothing that caught the most attention.
Fans focused instead on her hair.
A new hairstyle fans loved
Rather than her familiar soft waves, Kate wore her hair in a plait draped over her shoulder. The casual, effortless style quickly earned praise online.
“Obsessed with her hair in a plait,” one person wrote on X, according to Express.
Another added, “Wow love it.”
“That hair is absolutely stunning,” a third commented, while a fourth wrote, “Catherine’s hair is absolutely glorious.”
Expert says Kate “has practised”
Hair expert Brett MacDonald from CULT Hairdressing weighed in while speaking with Hello! Magazine. “When the hair is twisted before rolling it up, wrapping closer to the head each time, it causes the hair to self-tighten and lock in the base,” he explained.
“It works particularly well with long hair and we, hairdressers, use it all the time on wet hair to secure it without clips or pins when leaving the basins,” he continued. “I love the effortless elegance the Princess of Wales demonstrated, clearly showing that she has practised and applied it previously.”
Once again, Kate proved that even the smallest change can make a big impression.
