As King Charles Ill, now 76, continues his battle with cancer, the British monarchy finds itself at a crucial moment. With the eyes of the world fixed on Prince William-heir to the throne and increasingly stepping into the royal spotlight-attention is also turning toward his children. And surprisingly, it’s not just Prince George, the future king, making headlines. It’s Prince Louis, William’s youngest son, who may be set to receive a title steeped in royal tradition.

The Path to Duke of York?

Royal insiders are buzzing over the possibility that Prince Louis could one day be named Duke of York-a title historically reserved for the second son of the reigning monarch. Currently held by Prince Andrew, the title cannot be passed to a female heir and will revert to the Crown upon Andrew’s death, as he has no sons.

If Prince Andrew passes after Prince William becomes king, Louis could become the next Duke of York-a prestigious title that would cement his role in the monarchy’s next generation.

More Titles in Louis’ Future?

The Duke of York isn’t the only possible title in Louis’s future. He may also inherit the title Duke of Cambridge, which currently belongs to Prince William. When William becomes king, that dukedom could be passed down to one of his sons-making Louis a strong candidate.

These potential titles reflect just how significant
Prince Louis’s role may become as the royal family transitions into a new era.

Supporting All Three Wales Children

While Prince George’s future as heir is already mapped out-eventually taking on the title

Prince of Wales-Prince William and Princess Catherine have been intentional about ensuring all three of their children feel equally loved,

supported, and prepared for public life.

Royal experts note the importance of preparing both Prince Louis and Princess Charlotte for the responsibilities and pressures that come with their royal status-even if they won’t inherit the crown.

What About Princess Charlotte?

Princess Charlotte also has an important royal future. She may one day be granted the title Princess Royal, an honor currently held by Princess Anne. However, this title is not inherited automatically-it must be bestowed by the reigning monarch and is traditionally reserved for the eldest daughter of the sovereign.

If Princess Anne is no longer Princess Royal by the time Charlotte’s father ascends the throne, Charlotte could become the next holder of this distinguished title.

Titles in Transition

It’s worth noting that titles evolve with royal transitions. After the passing of Queen Elizabeth I in September 2022, William and Catherine became the Prince and Princess of Wales, and their children’s titles updated accordingly. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis are now often referred to as George Wales, Charlotte Wales, and Louis Wales in day-to-day contexts.

And while George is expected to one day take on the title Prince of Wales, that title is not automatic—it must be granted by the reigning monarch, as it was for Prince William shortly after Charles became king.

Looking Ahead

As the royal children grow older, their titles-and their roles-will continue to evolve. Though they were born into royalty, the coming years will define how each of them contributes to the monarchy’s future.

For now, Prince Louis may be the youngest of the Wales siblings, but his path is beginning to take shape. And with titles like Duke of York or Duke of Cambridge potentially on the horizon, his future in the royal family may be far more significant than many imagined.
