Introduction:
Mount Rushmore is an iconic American symbol featuring the magnificent carved faces of four presidents. Every year, millions of tourists visit the site, but very few know that behind those giant rocks—specifically behind Abraham Lincoln’s head—lies a tightly sealed secret chamber. What is this room? History & Purpose of Construction:
In the 1930s, the lead sculptor, Gutzon Borglum, had an ambitious plan that went far beyond just carving faces. He wanted to create a massive room called the “Hall of Records” to store important American historical documents for future generations thousands of years ahead. He started drilling a tunnel into the mountain, but unfortunately, he died in 1941 before the project was completed, and World War II brought the construction to a complete halt.
The Mysterious Completion:
It wasn’t until the late 1990s that the US government decided to fulfill the sculptor’s dream. They took essential documents, such as the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and the biographies of the four presidents, engraved them on glass panels, placed them in a teakwood box, and then sealed them inside a strong Titanium Vault. Finally, it was locked away behind a 1,200-pound granite capstone.
Why Is It Off-Limits?
Currently, the “Hall of Records” is closed to the public and tourists due to its difficult-to-access location and to ensure the maximum safety of the documents. However, this absolute restriction has sparked numerous rumors that perhaps there are other Top Secret state files hidden there by the government, beyond what they have told the public.
