Public Ruin: Chapter 1 – The Live Stream

The outdoor courtyard of The Grand Paragon was usually reserved for Chicago’s elite—a place for quiet luxury, dark wine, and subtle power plays. But tonight, it became the stage for a public execution of character.

Maya Sterling had worked six years to build her reputation as a lead corporate investigator. She was precise, untouchable, and fiercely private. But as she stepped out into the chilly night air after a business dinner, she found Julian Vance waiting for her under the glow of the entrance lanterns.

Julian wasn’t just a former colleague; he was the primary suspect in a multi-million-dollar fraud scheme Maya was preparing to expose to the board next morning.

“You really thought you could ruin me in secret, Maya?” Julian’s voice boomed across the courtyard, loud enough to cut through the soft ambient jazz music.

Conversations stopped. Heads turned.

“Julian, this isn’t the place,” Maya said, her voice icy and controlled, though her pulse spiked. “If you have something to say about the audit, call my office.”

“Your office?” Julian laughed, a cold, bitter sound. He pulled out his phone, holding up a bright screen toward the gathered crowd. “Should I call the office where you’ve been funneling offshore payments for the last three years? Look at her! The untouchable investigator is the one who opened the backdoor!”

A gasping murmur rippled through the onlookers. Within seconds, dozens of smartphones were raised, light lenses focusing on Maya’s stunned face.

“That evidence is fabricated, Julian, and you know it,” Maya stepped forward, her eyes locked on his with fierce intensity. “You forged those authorization signatures when you breached the security log last Tuesday!”

“Save it for the court!” Julian shouted, taking an aggressive step closer, thrusting the phone inches from her face as the crowd began live-streaming the incident. “The internet already has the files, Maya. You’re finished!”

Two venue security guards rushed into the clearing, placing themselves between Julian and Maya to de-escalate the rising chaos. The flashing of phone cameras turned the night into a dizzying strobe of judgment.

Maya looked around at the sea of strangers recording her collapse. She didn’t scream. She didn’t cry. She slowly backed away into the falling rain, turning her collar up against the cold.

Julian thought he had staged the ultimate public trap to ruin her before the board meeting. But what Julian didn’t realize was that Maya had been wearing a hidden wiretap recorded directly to an encrypted server the entire time—and the man who just leaked those documents had just confessed to having access to files only the hacker could possess…
