Public Ruin: Chapter 2 – The Counterstrike

The video of the public confrontation outside The Grand Paragon went viral in less than forty-five minutes. By midnight, millions of viewers across the country had seen Julian Vance pointing his finger at Maya Sterling, accusing her of embezzling millions from the Vance Corporation. Social media was relentless, and Maya’s reputation was being torn apart line by line in the comment sections.

Inside her private office on the 42nd floor, Maya didn’t watch the news. She didn’t check her phone, which had been buzzing nonstop with frantic calls from reporters, board members, and former colleagues.

Instead, she plugged a small, encrypted flash drive into her laptop.

The wiretap hidden under her lapel during the confrontation had captured every single frequency of Julian’s voice. In his rush to humiliate her in front of the crowd, Julian had slipped up. He mentioned specific encrypted server passcodes—information that had never been made public and was only accessible by the person who executed the illegal transfer.

Just as the progress bar on her laptop hit 98% for uploading the audio file to the Federal Financial Crimes Unit, the heavy glass doors of her office suite slammed open.

Julian strode in, his tie loosened, his eyes wild with adrenaline. He slammed his iPad onto her pristine glass desk, displaying the news headlines: “LEAD INVESTIGATOR ACCUSED OF MILLION-DOLLAR FRAUD.”

“You should have run, Maya,” Julian sneered, leaning heavily across the desk. “The board is convening an emergency session in two hours to terminate your contract. By morning, you’ll be in handcuffs.”

Maya didn’t flinch. She slowly leaned back in her leather chair, closed her laptop halfway, and looked up at him with a cold, measured expression.

“You always were too loud, Julian,” Maya said softly, her voice steady. “You spent so much energy assembling a crowd outside the restaurant tonight that you forgot to check what you were actually saying into the air.”

Julian’s smug expression flickered. “What are you talking about?”

“When you screamed at me about the offshore accounts, you cited transaction ID 904-B,” Maya continued, standing up slowly and buttoning her blazer. “That ID was generated thirty seconds before the breach, inside a private terminal using a master key. Only two people held that key: my late partner… and you.”

Julian’s face drained of color. He took a step back, his eyes darting to her laptop. “You… you didn’t.”

“I did,” Maya smiled faintly. “The entire audio file, along with your voiceprint matching the terminal log, was sent directly to the federal prosecutor three minutes ago.”

Before Julian could react, red and blue strobe lights began reflecting off the glass walls of the skyscraper from the street below. The distant sound of sirens echoed up through the night air.

Julian turned to look at the window, horror washing over his face. But as the elevator doors down the hall chimed open, Maya realized something was terribly wrong. The footsteps approaching weren’t federal agents—they were security officers wearing the emblem of the Vance family’s private security firm… and they weren’t there to arrest Julian.
