PART 3: THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL
The room went completely still again. The only sound was the steady hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
Mark looked up, his expression morphing from panic to genuine terror. “Medical records?”
“On the nightstand,” I said, each syllable measured and precise. “From Saint Jude’s Women’s Clinic. An ultrasound report dated two weeks ago. Jessica is fourteen weeks pregnant, Mark. With a boy.”
Mark covered his face with his hands and let out a broken groan. “God… oh God…”
“For three years,” I whispered, feeling the first sharp sting behind my eyelids, though I refused to let a single tear spill, “I endured hormone injections. We spent tens of thousands on IVF cycles. Every negative pregnancy test felt like a funeral. And every single time, you held me in bed and whispered, ‘Maybe it’s not meant to be, honey. As long as we have each other, that’s all that matters.'”
I leaned closer, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
“You had a vasectomy three years ago, didn’t you?”
Mark froze behind his hands. He didn’t deny it. He couldn’t.
“I found the surgeon’s bill among the receipts in your private safe behind the wardrobe,” I said, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. “You let me inject myself with synthetic hormones. You let me cry myself to sleep thinking my body was broken, thinking I was failing as a woman and a wife. You watched me break into a million pieces every month, knowing all along that you had severed the line yourself. And all the while, you were waiting for her to get pregnant so you had an excuse to start over.”
“Sarah, I panicked!” Mark sobbed, dropping to his knees on the rug between our chairs. “I didn’t want more children! We already have Lily and Ben! I couldn’t handle the stress, but you were so obsessed with having a third baby! I didn’t know how to stop you!”
“So you mutilated our marriage instead?” I looked down at him with utter disgust. “Get off your knees. You look pathetic.”
