PART 2: THE PAPER TRAIL
“Open it,” I commanded.
Mark hesitated, his fingers trembling visibly as he reached across the table. He flipped the tab of the folder open. Inside were neat stacks of printed bank statements, notarized real estate deeds, and wire transfer slips.
“This isn’t just about another woman,” I said, watching his eyes dart frantically across the numbers. “Adultery is pathetic, Mark. But this? This is treason.”
“Sarah… please, let me explain—”
“Explain what?” I tilted my head. “Explain why thirty thousand dollars was transferred from our children’s college trust fund into an offshore LLC named ‘Aegis Holdings’ last November? Or should you explain why your company’s internal accounts have been funneling vendor retainer fees into a shell corporation registered under Jessica Vance’s maiden name?”
Mark slammed the folder shut, breathing heavily. “You don’t understand corporate restructuring! That’s investment strategy! It was meant to come back—with interest! I did it for us!”
A short, bitter laugh escaped my throat. “For us? The deed to Apartment 4B isn’t leased under your company. It was purchased outright six weeks ago under Aegis Holdings, with Jessica Vance listed as the sole surviving beneficiary in the event of your death.”
Mark looked as if he had been struck across the face. His mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out.
“You didn’t just rent a love nest for late-night trysts,” I said, leaning back. “You were building an entire exit strategy. You were embezzling money from your father-in-law’s firm, siphoning our shared life savings, and setting up a brand-new, debt-free existence with your twenty-six-year-old assistant while leaving me with an underwater mortgage and empty college accounts for the kids.”
“It wasn’t like that!” Mark pleaded, tears suddenly welling in his eyes. “Jessica pressured me! She threatened to go to the board about our affair if I didn’t set her up! I was trapped, Sarah! You have to believe me!”
“You’re a terrible liar when you’re cornered,” I replied quietly. “Because I found the medical records too.”
