PART5 – The Locked Garage: A Mother’s Instinct Exposed a Terrifying Family Secret
PART 5
The police arrived less than two minutes later.
Two officers entered the garage while another secured the driveway.
The moment they saw Rachel, everything changed.
The emergency medical team arrived soon afterward.
As they carried her toward the ambulance, she kept looking at me.
“Mom?”
“I’m right here.”
“Don’t trust Tessa.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“Tessa knows.”
Before I could ask what she meant, the paramedics closed the ambulance doors.
I followed them to the hospital.
On the drive there, an officer sat beside me.
“Mrs. Harper, we need you to understand something.”
“What?”
“This doesn’t look like a spontaneous assault.”
“What does that mean?”
“The restraints were professional. The room was prepared.”
My stomach tightened.
“So someone planned this.”
“Yes.”
“Can you arrest Nolan?”
“We’ve detained him.”
“Detained?”
“We can’t charge him solely because we found your daughter in the garage.”
I turned toward him.
“You heard her say his name.”
“I understand.”
“She told me he did this.”
“I know.”
“Then why isn’t he in prison?”
The officer looked at me carefully.
“Because we’ll need evidence linking him to the crime.”
I almost laughed.
“I spent thirty-four years prosecuting people.”
“I know.”
“Then you should know how much evidence can be found when someone thinks they’re smarter than everyone else.”
He nodded.
“We already found something.”
“What?”
“A security camera.”
I frowned.
“There isn’t a camera in the garage.”
“Not in the garage.”
He handed me his phone.
The screen showed the neighboring property.
A camera pointed toward the alley.
And there, captured in grainy footage, was Nolan.
Carrying something into the garage.
Then another person.
A woman.
Wearing a faded blue cardigan.
Tessa.
I stared at the screen.
My daughter had been right.
Tessa knew.
But the officer wasn’t finished.
“There’s something else.”
He swiped.
The video showed Nolan leaving the garage alone at 11:42 p.m.
Then, thirty seconds later, another vehicle arrived.
A black SUV.
The driver stepped out.
I couldn’t see the face.
But I recognized the license plate.
I had seen it before.
Many times.
It belonged to someone I trusted.
My former deputy prosecutor.
Daniel Mercer.
I hadn’t spoken to Daniel in six years.
And yet here he was, arriving at Nolan’s garage in the middle of the night.
I looked up at the officer.
“Who is Daniel Mercer?”
He looked at me carefully.
“That’s what we’re trying to find out.”
I stared at the screen again.
And for the first time that night, I understood something terrifying.
Nolan hadn’t just hidden Rachel.
He had been hiding her from someone.
And that someone had connections far beyond this house.
The hospital doors opened ahead of us.
Rachel was taken inside.
I followed.
But as I reached the emergency room entrance, my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One text.
STOP ASKING QUESTIONS.
A second message arrived immediately.
THE NEXT PERSON WHO DISAPPEARS WILL BE YOU.
