PART4 – The Locked Garage: A Mother’s Instinct Exposed a Terrifying Family Secret

PART 4

A wave of cold, stale air rushed over me.

The garage was almost completely dark.

“Rachel?”

I reached for my phone’s flashlight.

At first I saw nothing except boxes.

Shelves.

A workbench.

An old refrigerator.

Then the beam of light moved across the floor.

And stopped.

There was a mattress in the corner.

A plastic bucket beside it.

Three empty water bottles.

A blanket.

And Rachel.

She was curled on her side, her wrists bound in front of her with plastic restraints.

The second showed her entering a courthouse.

The third showed me.

My own photograph.

Taken from across the street.

I turned another page.

There were photographs of my house.

My car.

My office.

My daily routine.

Someone had been watching me.

And the final photograph made my stomach turn.

It was a picture of Rachel and me together at my birthday dinner.

On the back, written in black ink, were five words:

“She knows too much already.”

I stared at the sentence.

Rachel saw my face.

“What is it?”

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t want her to know.

Not yet.

Because suddenly the question was no longer simply why Nolan had imprisoned my daughter.

The question was:

What did he think I knew?
