PART8 – They Tried to Charge Me Rent in the House I Owned After My Husband Died

PART 8

For the first time in years…

I saw fear in Leticia’s eyes.

Real fear.

Not fear of losing an argument.

Fear of losing the life she’d built.

The oversized bedroom.

The free utilities.

The spacious backyard.

Everything she’d treated as if it belonged to her.

It never had.

Valeria suddenly spoke.

“Mom…”

Everyone turned toward the fourteen-year-old.

“You told me Grandma gave this house to Dad.”

Leticia looked away.

“I…”

“You lied?”

“No.”

“I just…”

She couldn’t finish.

Valeria’s eyes filled with tears.

“You always told me Aunt Mariana was taking advantage of us.”

Nobody answered.

The silence itself became the answer.

The teenager looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

Three simple words.

More sincere than anything the adults had said all day.

I smiled gently.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Then another unexpected voice joined the conversation.

Teresa.

She stood slowly from her chair.

“I owe you an apology.”

Everyone looked at her in disbelief.

“I failed you.”

She looked directly at me.

“When Ruben died…”

Her voice trembled.

“I was so consumed by losing my son that I stopped seeing what everyone else was doing.”

She glanced toward Ernesto and Leticia.

“I heard things.”

She lowered her head.

“I ignored them.”

“I convinced myself it wasn’t my place.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

“But it was.”

She walked over until she stood in front of me.

“I’m sorry.”

The words carried genuine regret.

I believed her.

Not because they erased the past.

But because grief had finally stopped blinding her.

Unfortunately…

Not everyone was ready to admit the truth.

Ernesto slammed both hands on the table.

“This is manipulation!”

Daniel sighed.

“No.”

“You somehow changed the paperwork.”

Daniel smiled.

“These documents were registered with the county before your brother even moved into the home.”

“They’re fake!”

“Then I encourage you to tell that to the judge.”

The room became quiet again.

After nearly an hour of arguments, accusations, and increasingly desperate excuses, Daniel packed his briefcase.

Before leaving, he handed me one last folder.

“I think you’ll find this useful.”

“What is it?”

“A record of every payment you’ve made related to this property.”

I opened it.

Insurance.

Repairs.

Roof replacement.

New plumbing.

Heating installation.

Electrical work.

Landscaping.

Every expense.

Every receipt.

All paid by me.

Not once had Ernesto contributed.

Not once had Leticia.

Not even Teresa.

For twelve years…

They had lived comfortably while I quietly carried the responsibility of the home.

Daniel headed toward the front door.

Before leaving, he turned back.

“I’ll return in seven days.”

Ernesto frowned.

“Why?”

“To collect Mrs. Beltran’s decision.”

“What decision?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Whether she wishes to offer any of you lease agreements…”

He paused.

“…or whether she’ll proceed with the eviction.”

Then he left.

The front door closed softly behind him.

No dramatic exit.

Just certainty.

That evening, the house felt different.

No television.

No laughter.

No conversations.

Everyone remained in separate rooms.

For the first time…

No one treated me like an unwanted guest.

Instead…

They avoided me entirely.

Around ten that night, there was a soft knock on my bedroom door.

When I opened it…

Valeria stood there holding a small cardboard box.

“I found these.”

Inside were every photograph that had disappeared from the living room.

Wedding pictures.

Birthday celebrations.

Our honeymoon.

Christmas mornings.

Even the framed photo Ruben kept on his bedside table.

“I found them hidden in Mom’s closet.”

My heart tightened.

“You didn’t have to bring them.”

“I wanted to.”

She hesitated.

“I miss Uncle Ruben too.”

I couldn’t speak.

She carefully handed me the box.

Then quietly walked away.
