PART7 – They Tried to Charge Me Rent in the House I Owned After My Husband Died
PART 7
No one opened the envelopes right away.
It was as if they believed that, by refusing to look inside, whatever was written there couldn’t possibly be real.
The only sound in the living room was the ticking of the grandfather clock Ruben had restored with his own hands years earlier.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Finally, Leticia ripped her envelope open.
Her confidence lasted exactly three seconds.
“What… what is this?”
Daniel remained calm.
“A formal notice of ownership, proof of title, and notice to vacate if you choose not to enter into a lawful occupancy agreement with the property owner.”
“The property owner?” she snapped. “Who?”
He looked at me.
“Mrs. Mariana Torres Beltran.”
The room froze.
Ernesto laughed.
Not because he found it funny.
Because panic often disguises itself as laughter.
“This is ridiculous.”
He tossed the papers onto the coffee table.
“My brother owned this house.”
Daniel calmly opened his briefcase.
“I hear that claim often.”
He removed a certified copy of the deed.
Then another.
Then a certified property tax history.
Then the original purchase settlement.
Everything neatly organized.
He placed them one by one on the table.
“This is the registered deed.”
He pointed to the owner’s name.
Mariana Torres Beltran.
Only one name.
Mine.
Ernesto leaned closer.
His face slowly lost color.
“No…”
Daniel continued.
“These are twelve years of property tax payments.”
Every receipt.
Every year.
Every payment made from my bank account.
“This is the closing statement.”
It clearly showed that the purchase had been made with inheritance funds from my father’s estate.
Then Daniel produced the notarized declaration I’d read that morning.
“Signed by both Ruben Salazar and Mariana Torres Beltran.”
He slid it across the table.
“You may read paragraph four.”
Ernesto’s hands shook as he picked it up.
His lips moved silently while reading.
Halfway through…
He stopped.
Leticia grabbed the document from him.
She read faster.
Then looked at me.
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“No, this isn’t possible.”
“It is,” Daniel answered.
“Your brother agreed that the property belonged exclusively to his wife because it was purchased entirely with her inheritance.”
Teresa stared at me.
“You… you bought the house?”
“I did.”
“You never told us.”
I smiled sadly.
“You never asked.”
For almost a full minute, no one spoke.
Then Teresa whispered something that surprised everyone.
“Ruben knew.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“And he never put his own name on the deed?”
“No.”
She covered her mouth.
“He told me once…”
Tears welled in her eyes.
“He said he’d married the strongest woman he’d ever known.”
The room remained silent.
Then she looked at Ernesto.
“You lied.”
He blinked.
“What?”
“You told me Ruben bought this house.”
“I thought—”
“No.”
She interrupted him sharply.
“You said he bought it.”
“I assumed—”
“You assumed because you wanted to.”
Leticia wasn’t ready to surrender.
She stood abruptly.
“So what?”
Everyone looked at her.
“So what if her name is on a piece of paper?”
She pointed at me.
“We’ve lived here for years.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“So?”
“So your legal position is actually weaker.”
She frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means Mrs. Beltran has allowed you to live here without rent for years.”
Leticia folded her arms.
“Exactly.”
“Which means,” Daniel continued, “she has already been extraordinarily generous.”
Her smile disappeared.
“And now?”
“Now she may decide whether that generosity continues.”
