PART6-My Husband Brought His Secretary on Our Honeymoon… So I Left Before the Plane Took Off
PART 6
At noon…
My phone finally rang.
Julian.
I answered.
Not because I wanted to hear him.
Because I wanted him to talk.
I wanted him to reveal exactly who he was.
“Clara.”
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you?”
“Home.”
A pause.
“You came back?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He actually sounded relieved.
“Listen, I think there was a misunderstanding.”
I almost laughed.
A misunderstanding.
That was his first explanation.
“What misunderstanding, Julian?”
“About Sienna.”
“There is nothing happening.”
“She only came because of work.”
I looked at Evelyn.
She silently shook her head.
Keep him talking.
So I did.
“Then why did you bring her on our honeymoon?”
“Because I had no choice.”
“No choice?”
“Clara, you’re being emotional.”
There it was.
The phrase he always used.
When I had feelings…
I was emotional.
When he had excuses…
He was logical.
“I need you to understand something,” he continued.
“You embarrassed me.”
I closed my eyes.
“Embarrassed you?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know how ridiculous it looked when I arrived in Hawaii alone?”
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You are upset because you looked foolish?”
“That’s not what I said.”
“It is exactly what you said.”
His voice became colder.
“Come home.”
“No.”
Silence.
A long silence.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
“Clara…”
“You don’t get to make decisions for me anymore.”
The silence that followed told me everything.
Julian wasn’t used to hearing that word.
No.
Not from me.
Not from anyone.
“You need to calm down.”
“No.”
“We are married.”
“Not anymore.”
His breathing changed.
“What?”
“I met with my attorney.”
Another silence.
“You wouldn’t.”
“I already did.”
Then his perfect control disappeared.
“You are making a huge mistake.”
“No.”
“I am correcting one.”
He lowered his voice.
“Do you understand what happens if you do this?”
“I lose you?”
“No.”
“Your reputation.”
“Your family’s reputation.”
“The media.”
“The company.”
“You think people will believe you?”
There it was.
The threat.
The real Julian.
I smiled.
Because I had been waiting for him to say that.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
“What?”
“I don’t need people to believe me.”
“I have proof.”
The line went silent.
“What proof?”
I looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
I continued.
“Messages.”
“Emails.”
“Documents.”
“Everything.”
For the first time…
Julian sounded nervous.
“Clara…”
“Who helped you?”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“Who?”
“My attorney.”
“Who is your attorney?”
I smiled.
“Evelyn Parker.”
The silence became complete.
Because Julian knew that name.
Everyone in Manhattan’s business world knew that name.
Evelyn didn’t lose cases.
She didn’t make empty threats.
And she never walked into a fight unprepared.
“You set me up.”
“No.”
“You betrayed me.”
“No.”
“I protected myself.”
I ended the call.
For the first time in two years…
I ended the conversation.
Not him.
Me.
