The charity gala ended in absolute chaos. David immediately pulled Clara into his private study at the estate, slamming the heavy oak door behind them. The room was cold, lit only by the warm glow of the fireplace and the pale moonlight filtering through the French windows.
“Six years, Clara!” David’s voice boomed off the walls, shaking with a mixture of rage and heartbreak. “For six years, I believed my first wife died in that accident and that our newborn was lost forever! But tonight, that child walked into my gala holding Eleanor’s locket!”
Clara backed away, her emerald dress rustling against the leather armchairs. Tears smeared her mascara, but her eyes darted nervously toward the locked drawer of the mahogany desk.
“David, please… listen to me!” Clara stammered, her voice trembling. “It’s a scam! Someone is using that locket to frame me and steal your fortune! You can’t believe a stranger!”
“Then explain the duplicate key from three nights ago!” David stepped closer, his shadow looming over her. “Explain why you dropped the key to the locked SUV! You didn’t want anyone to see who was inside, did you? You knew!”
Clara froze, pressed tight against the wooden bookshelf. The weight of her lies finally crushed her composure.
“I had no choice!” Clara sobbed, her face twisting in bitterness. “Eleanor found out about the money I was moving out of the company! When she tried to leave with the newborn six years ago, I… I paid someone to make them vanish! I thought they were gone forever! I didn’t know the child survived!”
David stared at her, the horrific truth chilling him to the bone. The woman he had married was not a loving partner—she was the monster who had ripped his family apart.
“It’s over, Clara,” David said, his voice dropping to a icy, dangerous whisper as he reached for the desk phone. “The police are already on their way.”
