Five Days After My Wedding, My Stepson Brought an Attorney to Take My House—He Didn’t Know About My $38 Million

The estate had been settled through a trust.

The accounts were separate.

The documents were sealed.

Only three people knew the complete figure.

Jack’s estate attorney.

Christine.

And me.

Elden wasn’t one of them.

Yet he’d just named the exact amount.

Thirty-eight million dollars.

I felt cold.

“Who told you?”

He didn’t answer.

“Who told you?”

“June…”

“Who?”

He sat down.

“Your daughter.”

I stared at him.

“Cecily doesn’t know.”

“She knows more than you think.”

“No.”

“She told Dean.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because I never told her.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“Then maybe she found out.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

I stepped closer.

“Elden, my daughter has never seen my trust documents.”

He looked up.

“Then someone else told Dean.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

But now I knew something else.

The money wasn’t merely a secret.

Someone had been investigating it.

Someone had been looking for it.

And the question wasn’t whether Elden knew.

The question was how long he’d known.

I left the room.

He followed me.

“June, please.”

I walked downstairs.

“Where are you going?”

“To bed.”

“You’re just going to leave this like this?”

“Yes.”

“You can’t punish me without hearing me.”

“I heard you.”

“No, you didn’t.”

I stopped.

He was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

“I love you.”

I turned.

“Then you should have protected me from your son.”

His face crumpled.

“He’s my son.”

“And I’m your wife.”

He had no answer.

I went upstairs.

That night, I didn’t sleep beside him.

At 4:17 in the morning, my phone buzzed.

A message from Christine.

Don’t go downstairs. Call me immediately.

I sat upright.

Another message arrived.

Someone accessed your property records at 3:52 a.m.

I stared at the screen.

Then I heard something.

A faint sound downstairs.

The front door.

Someone was opening it.

I got out of bed.

Elden was asleep in the guest room.

I quietly stepped into the hallway.

The house was dark.

Then I heard the door close.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone was inside my house.

I reached for my phone.

I called 911.

But before I could speak, a man’s voice came from downstairs.

“June?”

I froze.

It was Dean.

I walked to the top of the staircase.

He was standing in the foyer.

“How did you get in?”

He held up a key.

“Dad gave me one.”

I looked toward the guest room.

Elden hadn’t moved.

Dean looked up at me.

“We need to talk.”

“At four in the morning?”

“It’s important.”

“No. What’s important is why you’re inside my house.”

His expression hardened.

“Because you’re making this difficult.”

“I’m not signing the documents.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“Because the lender knows about your inheritance.”

My blood ran cold.

“How?”

Dean looked directly at me.

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.”

“No.”

He took a step closer.

“We need access to the trust.”

I stared at him.

“You’re not getting it.”

“You don’t understand what happens if the hotel collapses.”

“I don’t care.”

“You should.”

“Why?”

His voice dropped.

“Because your husband could go to prison.”

Everything inside me stopped.

“What?”

Dean looked toward the hallway.

Then back at me.

“Dad didn’t tell you about the guarantee, did he?”

“What guarantee?”

“The personal guarantee.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Dean continued.

“He signed it before your wedding.”

I heard a floorboard creak upstairs.

Elden was awake.

Dean whispered:

“Ask him who actually owns the hotel.”

Then he turned toward the door.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

“What guarantee?”

He looked at me.

“Not the hotel guarantee.”

“Then what?”

His face was pale.

“The construction loan.”

He opened the door.

“And June?”

I said nothing.

“If the lender calls the guarantee, they’re not coming after the hotel first.”

He paused.

“They’re coming after the person who signed it.”

The door closed.

I stood alone in the foyer.

Behind me, I heard Elden coming down the stairs.

He stopped when he saw me.

“June…”

I turned toward him.

“Who owns Whitlock Hospitality Holdings?”

He didn’t move.

Then I asked the question that finally broke the last piece of trust between us.

“Why is your name missing from the company?”

Elden’s face went completely white.

And for several seconds, neither of us spoke.
