Royal Butler Challenges Prince Harry’s Claims About Camilla

A former royal butler has cast doubt on Prince Harry’s explosive claims about Queen Camilla, insisting that during his years of service he witnessed a very different reality inside the royal family.

Grant Harrold, who worked for King Charles for seven years, is releasing a memoir later this month entitled The Royal Butler: My Remarkable Life of Royal Service. In it, he recalls warm and often lighthearted moments between Charles, his sons, and Camilla—contradicting Harry’s version of events in his own book Spare (2023).

Did Harry and Camilla Get Along?

In Spare, Harry alleged that both he and Prince William urged their father not to marry Camilla, fearing she was playing a long game to secure marriage and eventually the crown.

Harrold, however, remembers the opposite. He says Charles was the “happiest he had ever seen” on his wedding day with Camilla and that Harry, William, and Camilla “got on so well,” sharing dinners and drinks together. He admits to being confused by Harry’s harsh words in his memoir, saying, “I don’t understand what Harry’s said.”

Harry’s Bond with William and Kate

Harrold also challenges the narrative that Harry was isolated from William and Kate. He insists Harry was included, often going shopping or to pubs with Kate while William was away. He even describes a friendly relationship between Kate and Harry’s then-girlfriend Chelsy Davy.

Harry himself once described Kate as “the sister I’d never had and always wanted,” and Harrold recalls that Harry doted on William and Kate’s children.

A Playful Royal Household

According to Harrold, William and Harry were “so close” during his service. He recalls them joking together, playing pranks, and even jumping out at Charles to make him laugh. The atmosphere, he says, felt like a normal family home.

This account starkly contrasts with Harry’s later allegations of conflict, including a physical fight with William in 2019 and estrangement from his father after stepping back from royal duties in 2020.

What It Was Like to Work for Charles

Harrold describes Charles as a calm and gentle man, never raising his voice, though often perceived by outsiders as distant. He recalls Charles warning him that royal life could be tough but hoping he would thrive in the role.

He also shares lighter anecdotes, such as delivering items to Camilla’s home at night before her marriage to Charles—only to be scolded by her for showing up so late.

Other Royal Insights

Harrold was surprised when Charles chose to reign as Charles III instead of adopting the name George VII, which he had once considered. He also recounts Prince Philip’s blunt reaction after Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, when the Duke of Edinburgh reportedly muttered to the Queen, “Thank [expletive] that’s over.”
