I Went to Surprise My Husband at Work—Then His Colleague Looked at Me With Tears in His Eyes and Asked, “He Hasn’t Told You Anything, Has He?”

“I didn’t want you to die because of me.”

The room went silent.

“What?”

Ben stepped closer.

“There is a man inside this hospital who has been stealing medication.”

I stared at him.

“Stealing?”

“Not ordinary medication. Expensive drugs. Cancer drugs. Specialty treatments. Drugs that never make it onto the shelves.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know his real name.”

“You don’t know?”

“He uses different identities.”

“Then how do you know he exists?”

“Because Emily saw him.”

My heart stopped.

“Emily?”

Ben nodded.

“She saw him the night her parents died.”

“What did she see?”

“He wasn’t supposed to be there.”

Ben’s voice dropped.

“He was in the ambulance bay.”

I remembered the note.

She knows who took me.

“Ben…”

He reached into his pocket.

“I need you to understand something.”

He pulled out his phone.

There were dozens of photographs.

Medical records.

Names.

Dates.

Bank transfers.

Patient files.

I stared at the screen.

“This is evidence?”

“Yes.”

“Evidence of what?”

Ben looked toward the closed door.

“Someone has been deliberately causing shortages.”

I didn’t understand.

“Why?”

“To make desperate families pay.”

He scrolled.

“Patients are told a medication isn’t available. Then someone approaches their relatives privately and offers to obtain it for an enormous amount of money.”

My stomach twisted.

“And Emily?”

“Her treatment was one of those medications.”

“Who was buying it?”

“No one.”

Ben’s expression changed.

“Because Emily’s parents were already dead.”

I stared at him.

“So someone was using her case?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To test whether the medication worked.”

I felt sick.

“And you found out.”

“I found out too late.”

He sat on the edge of the bed.

“I promised Emily’s mother I’d protect her. So I started treating her myself.”

“Using hospital supplies?”

“Yes.”

“Without authorization?”

“Yes.”

I understood then.

“You could lose your license.”

“I know.”

“Ben…”

“I would do it again.”

His voice broke.

“She was seven years old.”

I sat beside him.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question I had been afraid to ask.

“Did Emily really disappear?”

Ben closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Did you take her?”

His eyes opened.

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“I don’t know.”

I looked at him.

“But you were the last person with her.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Ben took a shaky breath.

“Last night, she asked me a question.”

“What question?”

“She asked whether you were my wife.”

I almost smiled through my tears.

“What did you say?”

“I said yes.”

“What did she say?”

Ben looked at me.

“She said, ‘Then she’ll help us.’”

My heart cracked.

“What did she mean?”

“I don’t know.”

He stood.

“She gave me something.”

“What?”

“A key.”

He reached into his pocket.

A small brass key lay in his palm.

“What does it open?”

“We don’t know.”

“Who is we?”

Ben looked at me.

“Arnold.”

I remembered Arnold’s tears.

“What does Arnold know?”

“Enough to be afraid.”

Before I could ask another question, the lights in the room flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

The hospital fell into darkness.

Somewhere down the corridor, an alarm began screaming.

Ben grabbed my hand.

“Stay with me.”

We moved toward the door.

Then we heard footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Coming toward us.

Ben pushed me behind him.

The footsteps stopped outside.

Someone tried the handle.

Ben held the door shut.
