PART 5
The laughter continued for several seconds.
Then the lights came back on.
I stood completely still.
“Rachel is my what?”
No one answered.
Detective Harris looked at me.
Even he seemed stunned.
The speaker crackled again.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“Your sister, Claire.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Listen to me.”
“No.”
“Your father had another daughter.”
“Stop.”
“She was born before you.”
“Stop!”
My voice echoed through the concrete room.
Harris moved closer.
“Claire…”
I turned toward him.
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
I looked at the speaker again.
“Where are you?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“I’ve been blindfolded.”
“Who took you?”
“I thought it was Martin.”
“You mean Evan?”
Silence.
Then Daniel whispered,
“Yes.”
The speaker crackled.
“He isn’t Evan.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?”
“He’s using Evan’s identity.”
“Then who is he?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, another voice came through.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Do you really want to know?”
I froze.
Martin.
The man stepped into the room behind a glass partition.
He wasn’t holding a gun.
He wasn’t wearing a mask.
He simply stood there.
And smiled.
I knew that smile.
I’d seen it across my dining table.
At charity dinners.
At Christmas parties.
At business meetings.
He had been in my home dozens of times.
“Hello, Claire.”
I stared at him.
“Who are you?”
He looked almost sad.
“That’s the question your father should have answered thirty-eight years ago.”
“Who are you?”
“My name is Michael Pierce.”
I looked at Daniel’s photograph.
“Not Evan.”
“No.”
“Evan was your brother.”
“Yes.”
“What happened to him?”
Michael’s expression changed.
“My brother died.”
“Seven years ago?”
He nodded.
“Your father knew.”
I felt dizzy.
“My father knew?”
“He knew everything.”
I turned toward the photograph.
The picture of my father suddenly seemed different.
For years, I had remembered him as strict.
Difficult.
Secretive.
But loving.
Or at least, I had believed he loved me.
Michael stepped closer to the glass.
“Your father met my mother when they were young.”
He paused.
“They had a child.”
“Rachel.”
“Yes.”
I swallowed.
“Then why didn’t I know?”
“Because your father chose you.”
The words struck harder than any accusation.
“What does that mean?”
“My mother wanted him to acknowledge Rachel.”
“And he refused?”
“He gave her money.”
My face tightened.
“How much?”
“Enough to disappear.”
I stared at him.
“That’s why Rachel came into my life?”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because she found you.”
Everything inside me went silent.
“When?”
“Five years ago.”
I remembered.
Five years ago, Rachel had appeared at a charity event.
She had approached me.
We had talked for nearly an hour.
She had told me she felt as though she’d known me forever.
I’d laughed.
I’d called it coincidence.
Michael continued.
“She knew you were her sister.”
I couldn’t speak.
“She became your best friend because she wanted to know you.”
My eyes burned.
“Then why betray me?”
Michael smiled bitterly.
“She didn’t.”
I turned toward the speaker.
“Daniel?”
His voice came through again.
“Rachel tried to protect you.”
“From what?”
“From me.”
Michael laughed.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Daniel shouted,
“Claire, listen!”
Michael cut the microphone.
Silence.
I stared at him.
“You kidnapped my husband.”
“Yes.”
“You kidnapped Rachel.”
“No.”
I stopped.
“What?”
“Rachel came willingly.”
“Why?”
“To help me expose the truth.”
I looked at the photograph.
Then the stolen documents.
Then the burner phone.
The forged signatures.
Everything began rearranging itself in my mind.
Rachel hadn’t stolen my husband.
She had been trying to uncover what Daniel had done.
But that still left one question.
“Why did Daniel tell me he ran away with her?”
Michael’s expression became cold.
“Because I gave him a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Confess or disappear.”
“And he chose to disappear?”
“He chose himself.”
I looked toward the speaker.
“Daniel?”
No answer.
Michael continued.
“Your husband had been stealing from you for years.”
My stomach tightened.
“How much?”
“Not money.”
“What then?”
“Information.”
I frowned.
“He gave your financial information to people who intended to use it against you.”
“Why?”
“Because he owed them.”
“How much?”
Michael smiled.
“Seven hundred thousand dollars.”
I closed my eyes.
Daniel had been gambling.
I knew he’d had debts once.
He had told me he’d stopped.
I had believed him.
But apparently he hadn’t.
Michael continued.
“He borrowed from people he couldn’t repay.”
“So he used me.”
“Yes.”
“Rachel discovered it.”
“Yes.”
“And she tried to warn me.”
“Yes.”
I looked down.
Everything Rachel had said suddenly sounded different.
Be careful with Daniel.
Don’t sign anything.
Keep your documents somewhere safe.
You should talk to your attorney.
I had thought she was jealous.
I had thought she was interfering.
I had thought she wanted my husband.
The truth was worse.
She had been trying to save me.
I looked at Michael.
“Then why did you threaten her?”
“I didn’t.”
“You sent the messages.”
“No.”
He pointed toward the ceiling.
“Someone else did.”
My blood ran cold.
“Who?”
Michael’s expression changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
“Your attorney.”
I stared at him.
“My attorney?”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“He has been moving your assets for months.”
I shook my head.
“He’s represented my family for twenty years.”
“And that’s why you trusted him.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Your father trusted him too.”
My heart stopped.
“What did he do?”
