Derek was already standing.
“I’ll go.”
The storage facility was surrounded by police vehicles when he arrived.
An officer opened the unit.
The lights came on.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
Some labeled with dates.
Some labeled with names.
One box immediately caught Derek’s eye.
It said:
FOR DEREK — WHEN YOU ARE READY.
His father’s handwriting.
Derek’s throat tightened.
He opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And beneath it, a small cassette recorder.
Derek pressed PLAY.
Static filled the room.
Then his father’s voice.
“Derek, if you’re hearing this, something went wrong.”
Derek closed his eyes.
His father continued.
“I discovered that Marjorie had been moving money from accounts I believed were protected for our family.”
Derek’s eyes filled with tears.
“I confronted her.”
A long pause.
“Richard was involved.”
Derek looked at Samuel.
The recording continued.
“I made copies of every document.”
Another pause.
“I told Marjorie I was going to report it.”
The next sentence made Derek’s blood run cold.
“She told me if I did, she would make sure Derek never trusted me again.”
Derek covered his mouth.
His father continued.
“I was afraid she would use my son.”
The recording crackled.
“I created a separate account for Derek. I also protected certain assets under another legal structure.”
A paper fell from the box.
Derek picked it up.
It was a trust document.
His name was listed as beneficiary.
He scanned the amount.
$412,000.
He couldn’t breathe.
His father had left him money.
His mother had told him there was nothing.
Then the recording continued.
“There is one person I trust outside this family.”
Derek leaned closer.
“Her name is Olivia Bennett.”
His entire body went rigid.
Olivia.
His father knew her before Derek did.
Then the final words were spoken.
“If my wife ever tells Derek I died without leaving anything, she is lying.”
The tape clicked off.
No one spoke.
Derek stared at the floor.
All those years.
All those years he’d believed his mother.
His father had tried to protect him.
And Olivia had somehow become part of that protection.
Samuel opened another folder.
Inside was an old letter.
This one was addressed to Olivia.
Derek read it.
Olivia,
I know I cannot undo what happened to your father.
But I can make sure you are never pulled into the same trap.
If Derek and you ever become family, tell him only when he is ready to know.
Derek’s eyes blurred.
“Her father.”
Samuel nodded.
“What happened to him?”
“He was your father’s business partner.”
Derek stopped.
Everything suddenly connected.
The old property.
The company.
The missing money.
Richard.
Marjorie.
Olivia’s family.
There had been a financial dispute between their fathers years ago.
Olivia’s father had confronted them.
Then he had disappeared from the business world.
Derek looked at Samuel.
“Did my father cause it?”
“No.”
Samuel pointed to a document.
“Your father tried to expose it.”
“And Olivia knew?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did she marry me?”
Samuel looked directly at him.
“Because she loved you.”
Derek turned away.
Tears finally broke free.
“I accused her.”
“I know.”
“I called her selfish.”
“I know.”
“I told her my mother was family.”
Samuel said nothing.
Derek whispered:
“I made her fight alone.”
His phone vibrated.
A message.
From Olivia.
Derek’s heart stopped.
It contained only four words.
I AM READY NOW.
Below it was an address.
A coffee shop on the outskirts of Scottsdale.
Derek drove there with two investigators nearby.
Olivia was sitting alone at a corner table.
When Derek entered, she looked up.
For a few seconds they simply stared at each other.
She looked thinner.
Tired.
But calm.
Derek took one step toward her.
Then stopped.
“I don’t know what to say.”
Olivia looked down.
“You don’t have to say everything.”
“I need to.”
She looked at him.
“Then say the truth.”
Derek sat across from her.
“I was wrong.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“I didn’t protect you.”
“No.”
“I believed her.”
“Yes.”
“I let her make you feel like a stranger in your own home.”
Olivia swallowed.
“Yes.”
Derek looked at the table.
“I am so sorry.”
She didn’t immediately respond.
Then she whispered:
“I wanted you to choose me.”
Derek looked up.
“I should have.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You should have chosen the truth.”
That sentence broke him.
“I do now.”
Olivia studied his face.
“What happened?”
Derek told her everything.
The USB drive.
The storage unit.
The tape.
The trust.
The connection between their fathers.
When he finished, Olivia remained silent.
Then she reached into her bag.
She placed a small envelope on the table.
“This is why I left.”
Derek opened it.
Inside was a DNA test.
His hands trembled.
He looked at Olivia.
“What is this?”
She stared at him.
“Your mother wasn’t only hiding money.”
Derek felt cold.
“What else?”
Olivia took a deep breath.
“Your father wasn’t my biological father.”
Derek blinked.
“I don’t understand.”
“My father and your father were business partners. But my mother had another relationship before she married my father.”
Derek stared at her.
“And?”
“The DNA records were part of the old business case.”
She pushed another paper across the table.
Derek read it.
His face went pale.
The name of the biological parent was listed.
Richard Hale.
Derek slowly looked up.
“Richard?”
Olivia nodded.
For a moment, the world seemed completely silent.
“That’s impossible.”
“It isn’t.”
“He’s your biological father?”
“Yes.”
Derek’s mind raced through every family gathering.
Every strange look.
Every moment Richard had seemed unusually interested in Olivia.
Every time Marjorie had become angry when Olivia asked about old family history.
Derek understood.
Richard wasn’t just helping Marjorie.
He had a personal reason to keep the past buried.
Then Olivia said:
“My mother died believing Richard would eventually admit the truth.”
Derek stared at her.
“And he never did.”
“No.”
“Why did you never tell me?”
“Because when I discovered it, your father was already dead.”
She looked down.
“And I was terrified that telling you would destroy your family before I had proof of what they’d done.”
