Nobody moved.
The judge looked down at the phone.
Then at Ethan.
Then at Melissa.
The expression on his face had changed.

“Mrs. Carter,” Judge Carlton said.
Melissa swallowed.
“Yes, Your Honor?”
“Is this recording authentic?”
Her attorney immediately stood.
“Your Honor, we object to the admission of a private recording—”
The judge raised his hand.
“I asked the mother.”
Melissa looked trapped.
For the first time since we entered the courtroom, she wasn’t controlling the room.

She looked at Ethan.

The room erupted with quiet murmurs.
Her attorney turned toward her.
“You didn’t tell me there was a recording.”
Melissa ignored him.
Her eyes stayed on Ethan.
“Ethan, why would you do this?”
That question broke something inside me.

She wasn’t asking:
“Are you okay?”

“How long have you felt this way?”
She was asking why he exposed her.
Ethan looked at her.
And his voice was barely above a whisper.
“Because nobody believed me.”
The judge leaned back.

The boy looked up.
“I want you to understand something.”
His voice softened.
“You are not responsible for protecting the feelings of adults.”
Ethan blinked.
“You don’t have to choose sides.”
A tear slipped down his cheek.
“I just want a home.”
The judge looked at the paperwork in front of him.
Then at my attorney.
Then at Melissa.
“I believe we have enough information to move forward.”
Melissa’s face changed.
“What does that mean?”
Judge Carlton folded his hands.
“It means the court will consider the child’s stated preference, the evidence presented, and the circumstances surrounding his care.”
My heart started pounding.
Because I knew what was happening.
The truth was finally being heard.
