PART4: My Daughter-in-Law Gave Me a $2 Scratch Ticket for My 73rd Birthday—She Never Knew It Was Worth Millions
PART4
It rang twice.
A professional voice answered.
“T&E Property Holdings. How may I assist you?”
“This is Graham Mercer. I rent the property at—”
The woman interrupted politely.
“Yes, Mr. Mercer. I have your account.”
“I’m calling because I received a termination notice.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
There was a pause.
“The owner intends to sell the property.”
Graham glanced at me.
“Sell it?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“After the lease expires.”
“Who is the owner?”
Another pause.
“I’m not authorized to disclose private ownership information.”
Graham’s eyes narrowed.
“I’ve been paying rent to your company for months.”
“And your payments have been received.”
“Then you can tell me who owns the company.”
“I’m sorry, sir.”
He hung up.
Paige immediately asked, “What did they say?”
“They’re selling.”
She stared at me.
“Where are we supposed to go?”
Graham looked frustrated.
“We’ll figure it out.”
Then his eyes returned to me.
For the first time in four years, I saw suspicion in his face.
Not concern.
Not love.
Suspicion.
“Mom,” he said quietly, “why aren’t you surprised?”
I smiled faintly.
“Because I’m seventy-three, Graham. I’ve learned that life rarely gives us surprises without leaving clues first.”
He didn’t smile.
“Did you have something to do with this?”
I stood.
“I think I’m going to finish packing.”
“Mom.”
I stopped.
“Did you?”
I turned around.
“You should ask yourself a different question.”
“What question?”
