PART4-My Son Tried to Take My House, But He Forgot One Important Thing: It Was Never His

PART 4

Greg stared at Emily.

“You can’t evict us.”

Emily looked at him.

“Actually, I can.”

He laughed.

“You are my daughter.”

“And she is your mother.”

Emily pointed toward me.

“You forgot that relationship when you decided to put your own mother in a nursing home so you could sell her house.”

Greg became angry.

“You are making me look like a monster.”

Emily looked at him.

“No. Your choices did that.”

Those words stayed in the air.

Greg looked at me.

“Mom, tell her this is a misunderstanding.”

I looked at my son.

The boy I raised.

The man standing in front of me.

And for the first time in months, I allowed myself to say what I had been holding inside.

“Greg, do you remember when your father died?”

His face changed slightly.

“Of course.”

“I remember you crying at the funeral.”

He looked down.

“I remember you holding my hand and saying, ‘Mom, I will take care of you.’”

His eyes became wet.

“I meant it.”

I shook my head.

“No. You meant it that day.”

The room became quiet again.

“But somewhere along the way, you stopped seeing me as your mother.”

I pointed toward the suitcase by the door.

“You started seeing me as a problem.”

Greg swallowed.

“Mom…”

“You didn’t move in because you were worried about me.”

I looked at him.

“You moved in because you wanted this house.”

Dana stepped forward.

“Enough. We are leaving.”

Greg looked surprised.

“What?”

She grabbed her purse.

“I said we are leaving.”

For the first time, I saw fear on Dana’s face.

Not anger.

Not arrogance.

Fear.

Because she finally understood that the house she had already decorated in her mind was never hers.

She had picked paint colors.

She had planned furniture.

She had imagined money from the sale.

And now all of it disappeared in one morning.

Greg didn’t move.

He just stood there.

Looking at the walls.

The walls his father built.

The walls where he grew up.

The walls where his mother had spent fifty years of her life.

Then Emily spoke softly.

“Dad, you have until tomorrow evening to collect your things.”

Greg looked at her.

“You are really doing this?”

Emily nodded.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Grandma is doing this.”

And for the first time in a very long time…

I felt like I was finally standing inside my own home again.

But I had no idea that Greg’s next decision would change everything.

Because the following morning, he came back alone.

And he brought something that I never expected to see.

Something Walter had hidden for more than twenty years.

Something that would reveal a secret about our family that even I did not know.
