PART4 – They Tried to Charge Me Rent in the House I Owned After My Husband Died

PART 4

Three nights later, the family held another dinner.

Everyone was present.

Teresa.

Ernesto.

Leticia.

Valeria.

Even Ruben’s younger cousin Miguel had stopped by.

Halfway through dessert, Ernesto cleared his throat.

“We’ve all been talking.”

I looked up.

“Have you?”

“Yes.”

Teresa nodded solemnly.

“We think it’s time to discuss household expenses.”

Here it comes.

“We’re all contributing.”

“That’s wonderful.”

Ernesto frowned.

“So… beginning next month…”

He slid a sheet of paper across the table.

“We’ll need you to pay rent.”

I looked down.

Printed neatly across the page:

Monthly Rent Agreement

Amount due:

$950.

I almost admired the confidence.

Charging me nearly a thousand dollars every month…

…to live in my own house.

Leticia folded her arms.

“It’s only fair.”

I looked around the table.

Everyone avoided my eyes.

Except Valeria.

The fourteen-year-old girl looked uncomfortable.

She knew this wasn’t right.

Children often recognized injustice faster than adults.

I picked up the paper.

Read every line.

Then folded it carefully.

Placed it back on the table.

“No.”

Silence.

Ernesto blinked.

“What do you mean, no?”

“I mean exactly that.”

“You have to contribute.”

“I already have.”

“For years.”

Leticia laughed.

“You’ve contributed what?”

I smiled.

“The roof over your heads.”

She rolled her eyes.

“Oh please.”

“No.”

I stood.

“I won’t be paying rent.”

Ernesto’s voice hardened.

“Then maybe it’s time you found somewhere else to live.”

I looked directly at him.

“I agree.”

His face brightened.

Finally.

He thought he’d won.

“I think,” I continued quietly,

“…it’s time someone moved out.”

Nobody spoke.

Not even Teresa.

The air itself seemed frozen.

Then I smiled.

A calm…

patient…

almost merciful smile.

Because none of them realized…

I had just made my decision.

I wasn’t going to defend myself anymore.

I was going to let the law do it for me.

And the first phone call I made the next morning wasn’t to a moving company.

It was to the attorney whose signature appeared at the bottom of the house purchase agreement.

When his receptionist answered, I said only one sentence.

“I think it’s time to remind some people who really owns this house.”
