PART8-My Husband Gave His Mom His Whole Paycheck for an Apartment—Then I Slid a Black Folder Across the Table

PART 8

Three days later, the answer arrived.

And when it did, I wished I had never asked.

The company wasn’t really dissolved.

It had been transferred to another owner.

And the new owner was…

Barbara.

I couldn’t breathe.

My mother-in-law had secretly taken control of a company that had once handled our property documents.

But why?

Mr. Sterling explained it carefully.

“Six years ago, when you and Mark purchased the house, the mortgage was approved based largely on your income.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“What you didn’t know is that Barbara had access to some of the paperwork.”

“What paperwork?”

“Your income verification. Your tax documents. Your bank statements.”

I felt sick.

“She had all that?”

“Apparently.”

I remembered the times Barbara had insisted on helping with paperwork.

The times she had offered to “organize” documents.

The times Mark had said, “Mom understands this stuff better than we do.”

My stomach turned.

“She used my information.”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To establish financial accounts and lines of credit.”

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly, dozens of strange things made sense.

The mysterious credit card.

The unexplained withdrawals.

The transfers.

The missing documents.

The refinancing paperwork.

The money Mark claimed he never had.

But there was still one question.

“Why would Mark help her?”

Mr. Sterling looked at me.

“Because he may not have understood what he was helping her do.”

That possibility hurt almost as much as the alternative.

“Was he involved?”

“We’re still investigating.”

Two weeks passed.

Mark didn’t contact me.

Not once.

He obeyed the order.

Ethan asked about him sometimes.

I never lied.

I simply said:

“Your father is dealing with some grown-up problems.”

One Saturday morning, Ethan was building a Lego city on the living room floor when the doorbell rang.

I opened it.

Mark was standing on the porch.

He wasn’t supposed to be there.

I immediately stepped backward.

“You can’t come here.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

He held up a sealed envelope.

“I didn’t come to talk to you.”

I stared at him.

“I came to give you this.”

He placed the envelope on the porch.

“What is it?”

“My confession.”

I froze.

Mark looked exhausted.

“I found out what Mom did.”

I didn’t say anything.

“She used my signature.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She forged documents.”

My heart sank.

“For years, she told me everything was legitimate.”

“Was it?”

“No.”

He looked at the floor.

“She convinced me that you were hiding money from me.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“She told me you had secret savings.”

I almost laughed.

“I did have savings.”

“I know.”

His eyes filled with tears.

“She told me you were preparing to leave me and take Ethan.”

“That wasn’t true.”

“I know now.”

“Then why did you believe her?”

He looked ashamed.

“Because I wanted to believe someone who told me I wasn’t failing.”

I stared at him.

He continued.

“She told me you looked down on me because you earned more.”

“That wasn’t true either.”

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“She made me feel like I had to prove I was a good son.”

“And you did.”

“I destroyed my marriage trying to prove it.”

That was the first time Mark had ever said it without making an excuse.

I looked at the envelope.

“What’s inside?”

“Everything.”

“Everything?”

“Bank records. Messages. Emails. Copies of documents Mom gave me.”

He took a breath.

“And a letter.”

“From whom?”

“Me.”

I didn’t touch the envelope.

Mark stepped backward.

“You don’t have to forgive me.”

“I won’t.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“But I’ll read it.”

His eyes became wet.

“That’s all I wanted.”

He turned around.

Then stopped.

“Sarah?”

“Yes?”

“Tell Ethan I’m sorry.”

I looked at him.

“You tell him yourself when the court says you can.”

Mark nodded.

Then he walked away.
