PART9: My Son Refused Me $3,200 After His $12 Million Deal—Four Days Later, He Begged Me to Undo What I’d Done

PART9

Larry looked at me.

“They wanted control.”

“Of the property?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they believed the land could eventually be worth more than twenty million.”

I looked toward the window.

For ten years, I had been told I was stubborn.

Shortsighted.

Financially irresponsible.

I had believed them.

Meanwhile, they had been waiting for my desperation to make me surrender the one thing they knew would eventually make me wealthy.

Then I remembered something.

“Larry.”

“Yes?”

“Why did the environmental restrictions disappear?”

He hesitated.

“We’re still investigating that.”

“Who originally reported the contamination?”

“That’s complicated.”

“Tell me.”

He placed another document in front of me.

“The original environmental complaint came from a company that no longer exists.”

I read the name.

It was a small consulting company.

I had never heard of it.

“Who owned it?”

Larry looked at me.

“Daniel.”

The room went silent.

Everything suddenly made sense.

Ten years earlier, the company had reported contamination near my property.

The report had destroyed my financing.

My business had collapsed.

The land became practically worthless.

And while I struggled to survive, someone had been waiting for the restrictions to be lifted.

Larry explained what he believed had happened.

“Your brother’s company reported the environmental concern. That triggered restrictions that lowered the property’s value.”

“And later?”

“Later, the company disappeared.”

“Then the restrictions were lifted.”

“Exactly.”

I stared at the documents.

“So he destroyed the value.”

Larry nodded.

“Then waited for the value to return.”

My chest tightened.

“And Richard knew?”

“We have evidence that he knew about the development potential. We’re still determining exactly how much he knew about the environmental report.”

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had blamed myself.

I had thought my business failed because I made poor decisions.

I had thought I wasn’t smart enough.

I had thought my son had been right to take control.

But now I understood.

I hadn’t failed.

I had been manipulated.

And the worst part wasn’t the money.

It was realizing that the people I had trusted had watched me struggle while knowing exactly what they were waiting for.

That afternoon, I asked Larry to arrange a meeting.

Not with Richard.

Not with Caroline.

With Daniel.

He arrived two hours later.

He walked into the hospital room carrying flowers.

“Boris,” he said softly. “How are you feeling?”

I looked at the flowers.

Then at him.

“Sit down.”

He sat.

“You look better.”

“I know what you did.”

His smile disappeared.

“What?”

“The property.”

He became very still.

I watched his hands.

They began to tremble.

“Boris, I don’t know what you’ve been told—”

“Larry has the emails.”

Silence.

Daniel stared at me.

“What emails?”

“The ones you wrote.”

His face drained of color.

For a long time, neither of us spoke.

Then he sighed.

“I never wanted you hurt.”

I laughed.

It was the saddest laugh I had ever made.

“You destroyed my business.”

“I didn’t destroy anything.”

“You reported the contamination.”

“It was real.”

“Was it?”

He didn’t answer.

I leaned forward.

“Was it real?”

He finally looked away.

“No.”

The word was barely audible.

But I heard it.

My heart sank.

Daniel rubbed his face.

“It wasn’t supposed to go that far.”

“Ten years.”

“I thought you’d sell.”

“You knew I was losing everything.”

“I thought the restrictions would eventually be removed.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe I had ruined my own life.”

He started crying.

“I was trying to protect my investment.”

“Your investment?”

He looked at me.

“You don’t understand how valuable that property was.”

“No.”

I pointed toward myself.

“I understand exactly how valuable it was.”

He lowered his head.

Then he said something that surprised me.

“Richard wasn’t supposed to know everything.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“I told him enough to get him involved. I thought he could convince you to sign the agreement.”

“So Richard was your tool.”

Daniel didn’t respond.

“And Caroline?”
