The sound of the front door closing downstairs echoed through the hallway. Mark had gone out again, leaving Elena and Clara alone in the vast, suffocating mansion.
Elena didn’t wait. She marched directly into Clara’s study, demanding answers about the chest and the missing letters from her biological mother. But before she could speak, Clara grabbed her firmly by the arm, forcing her into the room and slamming the heavy oak door shut behind them.
“You don’t know when to stop, do you?” Clara hissed, her gentle mask completely slipping away. Her grip was tight, a physical manifestation of the control she had exerted over Elena for years.
“Let go of me!” Elena broke free with a sharp pull, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. “I know you’ve been hiding her letters. I know you’re the reason my father thinks she abandoned us!”
In a flash of rage, Clara stepped forward, knocking a heavy crystal vase off the side table. It shattered into a hundred sharp pieces across the hardwood floor between them. Elena backed up against the wall, her heart pounding, but her eyes filled with newfound defiance.
“Listen to me very carefully, Elena,” Clara whispered dangerously, stepping over the broken glass. “You are living under my roof. One word to your father, and I will make sure you leave this house with nothing—just like your mother did.”
Elena stared at the shattered glass at her feet, realizing that Clara wasn’t just hiding secrets—she was willing to destroy anything that stood in her way. But Elena wasn’t a frightened child anymore. She looked up at Clara, her tears turning into cold determination.
