For three long years, the Miller household lived under a cloud of unspoken grief. Ever since Clara, the eldest daughter, left home without a word on her eighteenth birthday, her father, Richard, believed she had simply turned her back on the family.
What Richard didn’t know was that every smile, every quiet night, and every peaceful moment in that house was built on a lie.
It was a rainy Tuesday evening when Maya, Richard’s 19-year-old stepdaughter, was searching through the attic for old photo albums. Underneath a loose wooden floorboard behind a stack of dusty boxes, her hand brushed against something cold—a small metal box locked with a ribbon. When she forced it open, she didn’t find old trinkets. She found a series of unmailed letters written in Clara’s handwriting, addressed to Richard, each one detailed with heart-wrenching truths about what really pushed her away.
Maya stood frozen as the reality set in. The step-family dynamic wasn’t just strained; it was engineered to keep Clara out.
Hearing footsteps on the stairs, Maya quickly tucked the most revealing letter behind her back. Richard walked into the room, holding two cups of warm tea, his eyes filled with gentle warmth.
“Find anything good up here, Maya?” he asked, completely unaware of the storm brewing in her chest.
Maya’s jaw tightened. Her voice trembled as she stepped closer to him, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. “You think she left because she hated us… but you don’t know what really happened that night, do you?”
Richard froze, the warmth in his eyes instantly fading into shock.
