The air inside the Sterling mansion felt colder than the November wind outside. Lily stood in the center of the grand study room, surrounded by dusty oil paintings of men and women who had built their legacy on secrets.
In front of her stood Julian Sterling, her stepbrother, leaning against his father’s mahogany desk with a contemptuous smirk.
“You really thought you could run away with that journal, didn’t you, Lily?” Julian said, his voice dripping with arrogance. “Look around you. Everything in this town—the bank, the police, the land—belongs to us. A poor orphan girl holding a notebook changes nothing.”
“It changes everything, Julian,” Lily replied softly, her voice steady despite the adrenaline rushing through her veins. “Your father didn’t die of illness three years ago. He was trying to return the stolen property deeds to the valley families. The journal has the bank account numbers… and the names of everyone Victoria paid off.”
Julian’s smirk vanished instantly. His posture stiffened as he took a step forward, gesturing sharply toward the heavy oak doors. “Hand it over, Lily. Right now. You don’t belong in this house, and you certainly don’t belong in this family.”
“I never wanted your family’s blood money,” Lily whispered, her eyes burning with resolute anger. Behind her back, her fingers tightly gripped a small brass key she had found tucked into the final pages of the journal—a key that unlocked a safety deposit box at the local town vault.
The confrontation hung in a delicate silence, the gap between their two worlds wider than ever. Lily knew that if she walked out those grand front doors tonight, she could never return. But for the first time in three years, she wasn’t running away—she was fighting back.
