18-Year-Old Killed After Explosion and Fire at Brooklyn High-Rise Apartment Complex
BROOKLYN, New York — An 18-year-old man has died following an explosion and fire inside a high-rise public housing building in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, prompting a major response from New York City firefighters and emergency personnel.
The incident occurred Friday evening, August 28, at the NYCHA Albany Houses at 162 Troy Avenue.
Firefighters were called to the complex at approximately 7:04 p.m. following a report of an explosion. Authorities said the fire was located on the 12th floor of the 14-story residential building.
Heavy fire and smoke were reported as emergency crews arrived.
According to officials, approximately 38 FDNY and emergency units and about 120 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene. A HazMat unit was also requested.
Inside the affected apartment, emergency responders found an 18-year-old man suffering from critical injuries. EMS transported him to Interfaith Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities had not publicly released the victim’s identity in the initial reports.
Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly an hour before bringing it under control at approximately 7:56 p.m.
Lithium-Ion Battery Investigated as Possible Cause
The exact cause of the deadly fire remains under investigation.
FDNY officials told ABC7 Eyewitness News that they believe a lithium-ion battery may have started the fire. However, investigators have not yet announced a final determination of the cause.
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in devices including e-bikes, e-scooters, smartphones, laptops and other rechargeable electronics.
When damaged, improperly charged or defective, these batteries can experience a rapid increase in temperature known as thermal runaway, potentially resulting in intense fires.
Investigators will now work to determine exactly what happened inside the apartment and whether a battery was responsible for the incident.
Major Emergency Response in Crown Heights
The fire drew a significant emergency response to the Albany Houses complex as firefighters worked to contain the flames and prevent the fire from spreading farther through the high-rise.
The blaze was ultimately brought under control less than an hour after the initial emergency call.
The death of the 18-year-old has turned the incident into another tragic reminder of the potentially devastating consequences of residential fires, particularly when they occur inside densely populated high-rise buildings.
