NEWARK, New Jersey — August 29, 2026 — A massive three-alarm fire tore through multiple buildings in Newark early Saturday morning, causing a partial structural collapse and forcing several families from their homes.
The fire erupted shortly after 4 a.m. along South 19th Street near Clinton Avenue. Firefighters arriving at the scene encountered heavy flames and thick smoke coming from the structures.
The blaze intensified rapidly, escalating to three alarms as firefighters worked to prevent the flames from spreading farther through the residential neighborhood.
Building Partially Collapses
According to ABC7 New York, the fire began in an unoccupied property before spreading to a neighboring three-family home that was fully occupied.
As the blaze intensified, the original building partially collapsed.
Despite the dangerous conditions, everyone inside the occupied neighboring residence was able to escape safely.
Fire crews continued battling the flames until the fire was brought under control. Firefighters remained at the scene afterward extinguishing hot spots and checking the damaged structures.
12 People Displaced, No Injuries Reported
News 12 reported that 12 people from three families were displaced by the fire.
The American Red Cross responded to assist the affected residents with temporary lodging, food, clothing and other emergency services.
Authorities reported no injuries.
The outcome was especially fortunate given the intensity of the fire, the structural collapse and the speed at which flames spread to neighboring properties.
Fire Spread to Neighboring Buildings
CBS New York reported that the fire grew to three alarms within approximately 10 minutes.
Flames extended from the vacant property to two adjacent buildings, including a multi-family residence.

Vacant Property Had Previously Caught Fire

According to the report, the same building caught fire approximately three months earlier, making Saturday’s incident the second fire at the property in recent months.
The circumstances surrounding the previous fire and Saturday’s blaze have renewed concerns among nearby residents about the safety risks posed by vacant properties.
