PART 1: THE DISCOVERY IN THE DARK

PART 1: THE DISCOVERY IN THE DARK

The silence in the living room was suffocating, broken only by the sharp, ragged intake of Mark’s breath. Outside, a soft autumn rain tapped against the glass, casting watery shadows across the hardwood floor.

Mark stood frozen by the sofa, his briefcase hanging limply from his left hand. His face had drained of all color, pale as parchment.

“What… what are you talking about, Sarah?” His voice cracked, the confident executive tone he wore like armor completely vanishing. “Oak Street? Spare key? You’re not making any sense.”

I lifted the porcelain cup to my lips, took a slow sip of the chamomile tea, and placed it down on the glass coffee table without making a sound. My hands weren’t shaking. That surprised me more than anything. For months, I had imagined screaming, throwing plates, tearing down the walls we had built together over seven years of marriage. “Sarah, look, whatever you think you saw—”

“Don’t,” I cut in, lifting one finger. “Every lie you speak right now only digs your grave deeper. I took the morning off work. I drove past the bakery on 4th, turned down Oak Street, and parked three blocks away. Apartment 4B. The faux-stone pot with the plastic geranium by the door? The fake loose stone on the third planter ring? That’s where you keep the key, isn’t it?”

Mark closed his eyes, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the armrests.

“I walked inside,” I continued, leaning forward into the sliver of streetlight cutting through the blinds. “I smelled her perfume. The jasmine scent you bought her for her birthday. I saw the matching mugs in the sink. But none of that surprised me, Mark. I’ve known you were sleeping with Jessica for three months.”

Mark looked up, horror flashing across his features. “Then… what did you find?”

I reached into my wool coat pocket, pulled out a thick manila folder, and dropped it onto the coffee table with a hollow thud.
