PART6 – They Tried to Charge Me Rent in the House I Owned After My Husband Died
PART 6
When I arrived home, every car was already in the driveway.
Interesting.
No one usually came home this early.
As soon as I stepped inside, I understood why.
The entire family was waiting.
Teresa.
Ernesto.
Leticia.
Valeria.
Even Ruben’s uncle and two cousins.
Almost as though they’d planned an intervention.
Leticia folded her arms.
“We need to talk.”
I closed the front door quietly.
“So do I.”
“No,” Ernesto interrupted.
“You first.”
I looked around the room.
“No.”
His jaw tightened.
“What?”
“My house.”
The room fell silent.
“My rules.”
For the first time…
They looked uncertain.
Teresa spoke carefully.
“Mariana… your brother-in-law says you’ve been refusing to cooperate.”
“I have.”
“You’ve become… difficult.”
I nodded.
“I have.”
Leticia smirked.
“So you’re admitting it.”
“I’m admitting that I finally stopped letting people walk over me.”
Ernesto stepped forward.
“Enough games.”
He tossed a stack of papers onto the coffee table.
“I printed the property records.”
I looked down.
Copies from the county website.
He smiled triumphantly.
“See?”
He pointed dramatically.
“Ruben’s address.”
I almost laughed.
“That’s your evidence?”
“It proves he lived here.”
“Of course it does.”
“He owned this place.”
“No.”
“Yes!”
“No.”
The room grew tense.
Finally, Ernesto slammed his fist on the table.
“Then prove it!”
I looked at him for several long seconds.
Then I reached into my purse.
Not for the deed.
Not yet.
Instead, I pulled out a business card.
I placed it gently on the table.
Daniel Álvarez.
Attorney at Law.
Ernesto frowned.
“What is this?”
“The man who handled the purchase.”
“So?”
“So…”
I smiled.
“…he’ll be here in fifteen minutes.”
Every face changed.
Especially Leticia’s.
“What?”
“I invited him.”
“You what?”
“I thought this conversation deserved someone who actually knows the law.”
No one spoke.
The confidence that had filled the room only moments before began to drain away.
Valeria looked from her parents to me, confused.
Her father had always spoken as though the house was already his.
Now…
For the first time…
He looked nervous.
Very nervous.
Fifteen minutes later, the doorbell rang.
I opened it.
Daniel stood there carrying a black leather briefcase.
Behind him…
A uniformed process server stepped onto the porch holding a thick envelope.
Daniel met my eyes.
“Are you ready?”
I looked back into the living room, where every member of Ruben’s family had suddenly fallen silent.
Then I stepped aside.
“Please come in.”
The process server entered first.
He looked directly at Ernesto.
“Are you Ernesto Salazar?”
“…Yes.”
“You’ve been served.”
He handed him the envelope.
Then another.
To Leticia.
Another.
To Teresa.
One by one…
Every adult in the room received official legal papers.
No shouting.
No threats.
No dramatic speeches.
Just the quiet sound of envelopes changing hands.
And as the realization slowly spread across their faces…
I knew the game had finally changed.
Because for the first time since Ruben’s funeral…
They weren’t looking at me like I was the helpless widow.
They were looking at me like the owner of the house.
And they had just discovered they were living there only because I had allowed it.
