The air inside Vance Fine Antiques was heavy with the smell of old paper and polished mahogany. But tonight, that familiar scent was overwhelmed by the sharp stench of betrayal.
“Where is it, Clara? I know you took it!” Eleanor’s voice sliced through the quiet shop like a blade. Her eyes burned with fury as she slammed her hand against the glass display counter.
Clara backed away, her hands trembling violently. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked down at the velvet box—empty. The Victorian diamond necklace, worth half a million dollars, was gone.
“I swear, Mrs. Vance, I didn’t touch it!” Clara begged, her voice cracking. “I was only dusting the shelf! It was already missing when I came in this evening!”
“Liar!” Eleanor snapped, stepping forward and gripping Clara by her shoulder. “You are the only one who had the key to this case today! You’ve been struggling with money, haven’t you? I gave you a job, a roof over your head, and this is how you repay me?”
Physical confrontation flared as Eleanor tried to grab Clara’s apron pocket, convinced the necklace was hidden on her. Clara sobbed, struggling to pull away, repeatedly crying out her innocence.
From the shadows of the back office, Julian walked out slowly. He was Eleanor’s stepson—a polished, handsome man in his early thirties with eyes as cold as ice. Instead of diffusing the situation, he casually leaned against the doorframe, watching the two women struggle. A subtle, chilling smile flickered across his lips before he quickly wiped it away, masking it with an expression of fake concern.
“Mother, please, stop,” Julian said smoothly, stepping between them. “Let’s not make a scene. Clara… if you just give it back, maybe my mother won’t call the police.”
“Mr. Julian, please believe me! I didn’t take it!” Clara cried, looking into his eyes for help.
What Clara didn’t know was that two hours ago, Julian had quietly unlocked the display case himself. Deep in gambling debt, he needed the money desperately. Framing the poor maid was the perfect cover—not only would it erase his debts, but it would also guarantee that his stepmother never questioned his loyalty.
As Eleanor reached for the telephone to call the police, Clara caught a glimpse of Julian’s right coat pocket. Tucked deep inside, a tiny glint of silver caught the moonlight.
Before Clara could say a word, Julian leaned in close to her ear and whispered something that froze her blood instantly…
