The piercing sound of police sirens echoed down the cobblestone street, growing louder by the second. Red and blue lights flashed rhythmically through the tall glass windows of Vance Fine Antiques, casting eerie shadows across the polished floorboards.
Eleanor stood near the doorway, holding the phone, her face cold and unforgiving. “They’re here, Clara. Your life is officially over.”
Clara remained on her knees, her cheeks soaked with tears. Her body trembled, not from fear anymore, but from a sudden surge of adrenaline. Just inches away from her knee, half-hidden beneath the dark carving of the oak cabinet, sat a small golden object.
It was a custom-made gold cufflink, engraved with the initials J.V.—Julian Vance.
When Julian had shoved his hand into Clara’s apron pocket to plant the stolen necklace, the cufflink must have snagged on the thick fabric and popped off his sleeve.
Julian’s eyes darted downward. The moment he realized what was resting on the floor, the arrogant smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a flash of pure panic.
Before he could react, Clara slid across the floor and slammed her hand down over the cufflink, snatching it into her fist.
“What are you doing?!” Julian snapped, stepping forward aggressively, his voice cracking with uncharacteristic anxiety. He reached down to grab her arm, but Clara quickly pulled back, holding her clenched fist tight against her chest.
“Julian! What is wrong with you?” Eleanor asked, startled by her stepson’s sudden outburst. “Leave her! The officers are walking in right now!”
Julian froze, his forehead slick with cold sweat. If Clara showed that cufflink to the police—and if they checked the display case for fingerprints—his entire life would unravel in minutes.
Two armed officers pushed open the heavy wooden door, the bell chiming above them. “Mrs. Vance? We received a call about a high-value theft.”
Eleanor pointed directly at Clara. “Yes, Officer. My maid stole a five-hundred-thousand-dollar necklace. We found it in her pocket.”
The officer stepped toward Clara, taking out his handcuffs. “Stand up, ma’am. Keep your hands where I can see them.”
Clara looked at the officer, then turned her eyes slowly toward Julian. Julian was trembling slightly, his eyes begging her with a silent, desperate threat. But Clara knew that if she stayed silent, both she and her innocent brother would rot in jail.
Clara slowly stood up, keeping her right hand locked into a tight fist. She looked the police officer straight in the eye and said six words that made Julian’s stomach turn to ice…
