The silence inside the antique shop was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic hum of the flashing police lights outside.
“Check his sleeve!” Clara repeated, her voice steady and echoing with raw determination. She opened her hand, revealing the heavy gold cufflink engraved with the initials J.V. “He lost this when he shoved the necklace into my apron pocket to frame me!”
The lead officer, Officer Davis, glanced down at the golden cufflink in Clara’s palm, then turned his sharp gaze toward Julian. “Sir, please step forward and show us your wrists.”

Officer Davis bent down, picked up the paper, and unfolded it. His eyes scanned the ink, and his brow furrowed into a deep frown.
“A pawnshop receipt dated yesterday…” Officer Davis read aloud, turning his stern eyes onto Julian. “For a deposit of twenty thousand dollars against a stolen Victorian ring… belonging to Vance Antiques.”
Eleanor stumbled back, gasping in horror, clutching her chest as if she had been struck. “Julian… what have you done?”
